Title: Sparkplug Tightening Torque
Post by: omegaV6CD on 07 September 2010, 13:40:20
Hello folks.

I was carrying out the annual omega service yesterday on my Dad's MV6. Typically on omega's i always tightened the plugs by hand but this time i got a snap on torque wrench to do the job properly on the 25NM torque.
It didn't feel right tightening the plugs to that torque it felt like there was a bit of give from the threads. Is that normal? is that the washer squashing or was the torque damaging the threads??
Any advice will be much appreciated.

Spark plug torques have been a problem for me too.  In my Haynes manual for a 2.0 litre SOHC it says 25 Nm for "spark plug heatshields".  My car though is a 2.0 DOHC and in that section in the manual no torque is given for spark plugs.  However, in the information that came with the plugs I installed a year ago (BOSCH Super 4 520 FR 91X) it says 28 Nm.  My torque wrench is scaled in kilogramme metres not Newton metres.  28 Nm is 2.855 kg m.  The lowest mark on my torque wrench is 3 kg m and that's what I used for the recent second installation of the same plugs.  (The crush washers are already crushed)

I noticed that when I removed the plugs they released very easily, as if they had not been as tight as they should have been.  I am guessing that after first installation it would be a good idea to go back to them withing say one month and retighten them.

Here for the sister of Omega (Cadillac Catera 2001) the Torque is specified as well at 19 Ft Lbs or 25 N-m.

Cheers.

Yep, its 25Nm.

When fitting I torque them all up and then go round them all again as often the washer has relaxed

Now he tells us, just did mine at the weekend, 25nm. 30k since fitting. Had a miss fire/ grumpy start last week, only did it once, pedal trick revealed 0300 and 0304. Sure enough, cylinder 4 was loose to the point I could undo spark plug  by hand with soot all round the base  :-[ 2 and 4 also loose but no soot marks.

Changed them all anyway but I didn't go over them to re torque again.  :'(
