Title: Rear brake discs
Post by: tomoco on 21 September 2010, 15:40:42
is it possible to replace the standard solid rear brake discs with grooved or vented ones.?. i'm getting pretty fed up with the squeeling noise (new solid discs and pads 10K ago) genuine vx ones were fitted
Would it be a straight forward fit with the grooved discs or would i have to replace the calipers too ?
going to service/replace the rear hand brake shoes soon so i thought i would try some different discs at the same time.
i've heard that the grooved/vented discs run cooler which is good because i only get the squeeling sound when the brakes are hot.

Thanks in advance for any help :y

got to go work now :'( so i'll check back tomorrow

I thought the later V6's had vented rear disc's or was that just the 3.2. I fitted vented to my old 3.0 but it meant getting the calipers as well.

Grooved discs offer no increase in brake performance, but will fit inside the original calipers. ..... but they apparently look pretty  ;)
Vented discs were fitted to later car, as Pete says. The master cylinder is also different, so the fitting of just vented discs with their calipers will affect the front/rear bias of your brakes. I realise though that some have fitted them to earlier cars.  :y

just looked at what car you have. I'd check that you shouldn't already have vented.
Whatever discs you have though, they shouldn't squeal.  :y

I thought all later V6s got vented disks. Be very careful that a solid disk has not been fitted with a caliper designed for vented disks! After a certain level of pad wear the piston will pop out and you'll lose the brakes. :o

Hi, and thanks for the advice..i've just checked and they are vented, (must put my glasses on next time)
One of them is very badly scored. That may explain the noise im getting. I'll have to replace them again.

Shall i go down the VX route again or are after market ones any good?
Do any of you know a good suppliers. i rang one place in leicester but he insisted they were solid discs. He even asked me if i was looking at the right end of the car (the bit where the boot is) "The Cheeky So and So"
Yes i said its the bit where the exhaust sticks out  :y
Its takes allsorts dont it?

At the price Vauxhall charge (on Trade Club) I'd stick with them.

2,6 & 3,2 have vented rear discs, all others solid. BUT I have seen two cars which are out of this spec: one was 3,0 with vented rear discs and one was 2,6 with solids. But I still keep this as a fact that dbw V6's have vented ones and all others solid.
