Apologies for this morning's outage, and the length of it.

As many members know, the forum runs on a vitrual Linux server, that runs on a Windows server via VMWare Server.

VMWare Server has a well known (but denied by vendor) issue with part of the network (I won't go in to details for security reasons), in that it doesn't always pass traffic particularly after a reboot.

Microsoft issue most security updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month.  This means our Windows server downloads them on Wednesday, and installs them in the early hours of Thursday morning.

This month, the patches needed a reboot, which the server did, but the VMWare bug kicked in, resulting in the Linux server being up, but not getting any traffic.

M_DTM contacted me about it, but I was already on the way to work. I stopped, but trying to do much via GPRS and a mobile phone screen is never going to be quick, so it had to wait until I got in to work.  Took a bit of work to 'fix' it, hence not actually working until 9:40.

On behalf of the Admin team, please accept my apologies for the outage, but I'm sure a lot of you got some real work done instead ;D

I NEVER install updates automatically - I always check them first

The problem was not the MS updates, but the fact that the host had to reboot.  It would make no difference if auto or manual installed.

Advantage of auto install - middle of night to keep you lot happy, and that server secured within 2 days of patch availability....

i would add that auto updates should always be enabled - too easy to be lax with manual....

I don't have any experience of Linux running on Win via VMWare but it sounds awfully complicated. Could you not just run a separate Linux box - or am I missing something?

Nonsense. Utter nonsense.

If you're getting WGA positives, the system actually has to say that is the case.  Sure you ain't been sharing your licence?  Also, IIRC, your licence was OEM? If so, check if it was tied to a particular manufacturer.

I could, but the advantage of multiple servers running on more powerful hardware is due to the 'bursty' nature of most servers, the virtual machines tend to run faster than if they were on a dedicated, but modest, hardware.

But the main reason is my £100 per month leccy bill - I really don't want to pay more!

At least you can get VMWare to reboot the VM automatically.  ::) :-[

LOL, the VM was fine, it was VMWare's subsystem that fails....

I know of both theses issues (its my job to ;))

The first only affects volume copies, which nobody should be using at home.

2nd was a simple glitch, and won't affect anything long term (the scope of it was very small).

Neither are a reason not to run automatic updates, as not putting on the security updates asap is dangerous and irresponsible.

Perhaps I should have said 'WGA for home users does not permenently give positives unless the licence has been breatched'

The fact that you have managed to sign up here (so have an understanding of email and web) means you likely are IT literate enough to bluff your may through this setup ;)
