I've been going over my motor before I put it in for it's MOT tomorrow. Sorted a couple of things out already such as the full track rod ends both sides. I now know I need wishbones and drop links both sides and have ordered them ready. Now for the confusing part:-
With the wheels straight and holding at 9-3, no sideways play.
With full right lock and holding 9-3, no play.
With a full left lock and holding 9-3, approx. 1/4" of play???
Steering idler was new a couple of months ago so unlikely it's that. Any suggestions where to look next?
[edit]for smelling pistakes ;)[/edit]

Just to add the play is hardly noticable on the drivers side, if at all. It's worse from the passenger side.
Top shock mount?
Steering crossmember?

Centre tie bar/drag link check the passenger side bush for up and down movment

Passenger side holding the tie bar up? That is the steering idler and that was new in August. No real play to be seen in the tie bar and can't feel any play in the joints either.

THere should be no play in the passenger side tie bar,as the joint just turns with the movement, and its not like the drivers side one thats more like a ball joint if that makes sense

Do observe the idler and track rods carefuly.
The fact anything its new is no reason to rule it out :y
Where did the idler come from?

Local motor factor, came in a lemforder box. Track rod end looks solid when movement is there, very slight twist on the tie bar but looking at it again theres a very gentle clunking sound that seems to be coming from the shock :-/

I'm doing the wishbones and drop links this morning and I'll see what play is evident once they've been changed. 8-)
[edit]to add; also ordered a cat back zorst as looking this morning most of it looks like the lid of a pepper pot![/edit]

Right just spoken to my MOT man on the way back from collecting my arms and droplinks. Aparently it's normal! It's because there is a steering box and not a rack so they are allowed up to 1.5cm (5/8" if you only speak english like me!) play and it's only tested with the wheels straight so he doesn't forsee a problem! That'll do me then ;D

Wellung,
Where did you get that exhaust from? I am in desperate need of a full system from down pipes bace for a 2.5 petrol.
Cheers,
Martin
