Title: More on Cats
Post by: mark.adams on 30 September 2010, 18:25:38
I just bought one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200461197117&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT as the photo on the listing clearly shows a pre-cat fitted, however, thats not what has arrived, the 'pre-cat' is an enlarged piece of tubing, doesn't look anything like the pre-caton my current exhaust, have i been diddled?

It's collapsed, rattling like a rattly thing, occasionally has an attractive eggy smell too

Unusual.

Id be more inclined to get a 2nd hand genuine one than a cheap, nasty new pattern....

That was a second hand one, lasted me a good six months or so though, Vx price for a new one was £800....

Can you post a picture of the replacement as not all cats look the same

Just getting the wife to take one as the parts co. asked the same question, what would be the pre-cat is an oversized tube, not 'cat shaped' at all.

Can't upload a photo as all the photo sharing sites are blocked here at work..
However, sent photo to exhaust co. they said it is a pre-cat fitted just a smaller aftermarket version so i'll see how it works/sounds when fitted this weekend

You could always feed a bit of curtain wire/twin and earth or similar down the tube - if it won't go through that section it's a CAT, if it will, it's probably just a resonator..

Tried that last night as that was one of my thoughts, curtain wire won't go through it. So i guess it must be a pre-cat after all, only time will tell whether its any good and if the engine management system throws any errors up

Okay, new cat fitted, blew like a cheap tart with the gasket they supplied, so took it back off and fitted my old one, perfick... no emissions light, no rattle, sounds fine, goes like a rocket, very happy....
