Title: Crank shaft position 2.5 V6
Post by: Malcolm_D on 01 October 2010, 20:46:47
When setting up the timing to replace the cambelt is it possible to get the position of the crank out by 180 degrees? If so how do you ensure that this does not happen? I am using a locking kit and have watched the DVD a couple of times.

You wont be rotating the crank with the belt off anyway, so its not really possible.

Do you have a cambelt timing kit? You should have two locks for the camshafts, and once that screws onto the crank (which i think will only fit in one position, which again makes it impossible to have crank 180degrees out)

Hi Malcolm,

You could have the insurance of taking out the no 1 plug and turning the engine until you get to the compression stroke, then remove the belt and the flat face on the crank pulley will be pointing roughly the right way.

Or ofcourse with the cam cover off you could turn the engine to line up the cam pulley marks with those on the rear cam cove.

Notwithstanding all that, I don't recall it being a problem when I done mine, I think the locking tool will only go on one way.

Good luck :y

Ah!!! I thought the belt was still on! Don't rotate the engine if it's off!!!!

Yes you could get the crank 180 degrees out if you don't know that the line through the bolt hole goes to the bottom (6 o'clock)..

Hope that helps :y

The belt is still on, I have the locking kit, and there is no way that I am turning that crank without the belt in place!
Thanks for all of the helpful advice, especially you Mr Loo-Knee, master of the cambelts!!  :D I am still resisting the pure white header tank but have developed a liking for Astley's tunes - what have you done to me?  ;D ;D ;D

Hey no problem fella, I wasn't having a dig. I am always happy to listen to others pointing out the obvious because like most I have those moments when I turn into a complete muppet and do something really stupid. Thinking about it they are getting more frequent!  ;)

When you doing it? If you like I could always pop round and give you a hand?

I (with the aid of a few others) fitted the cambelt on mine just over 2 years ago, so im sure between us we will get it sorted.  :y

Thanks for the offer Ian but I reckon I am sorted, have seen Daz do my 2.6, got the DVD and I have a mate to help. Have done them on 1.6 clit, 2.4 Volvo, both tight for space, and did several on the Carltons I used to have.  :y

Not yet. Have done the timing belt and water pump - everything went fine, timed up and checked endlessly! The aux belt which was supplied is the wrong one, too long so I have arranged to get the right one on Monday, will complete it Monday evening and let you know if successful.  :y
