Title: Safe areas for axle stands
Post by: tomoco on 04 October 2010, 23:19:39
I'm doing my rear discs, pads and hand brake shoes very soon and i've always wondered where the best place to sit the axle stands were. I usually use the trolley jack at the main rear suspension points which does'nt leave many places left. dont want to bend floor pans or anything else.
I can only jack up the car one side at a time so i cant use the diff as a jacking point.

Thanks in advance
Mark

I use the area by the exhaust hanger, directly inboard of the suspension points iirc...

Throuble is, larger jacks are in the way of the stand base.... :-/

I know what you mean Mark I suffer from the same misgivings One thing I can say I will never use the diff as a jacking point I think it could damage the diff.I have 2 clarke strongarm 2 tonne trolley jacks and I use one on each side chassis/suspension point which I find lifts miggy nicely I realise there's the safety angle so I simply put a axle stand under or even 2  set a bit lower to catch the car should the jacks let go.Used this twin jack system with success for years but on a good solid concrete carport floor.

forgot to mention another point the jacks have in my case a 5" cradle so I made  tight fitting circular pad inserts from 1" hard wood ply these do give a fairly slip free hold and don't damage the car

Thanks guys, i normally use a small 2 ton trolley just forward of the main suspension bolt (still on the steel plate) then try to slide an axle stand under the bolt itself. sometimes this takes a couple of go's. My drive is a bit uneven so i'll have to do one side at a time.

Thanks again.
