I cannot help with the plastic handle end of things, but my bonnet release was very stiff and I was worried about breaking the handle in my efforts to open the bonnet so after you have fixed the handle it may be worth doing what I did to prevent it happening again.

In my case the bonnet pin was binding on the side of the catch in the slam panel so I moved the bonnet back a little until the pin was central with the hole.  That helped a little, but the major improvement was to ease the pressure on the spring of the bonnet pin.  It screws into the bonnet and has a couple of flats on its lower end to aid adjustment.  Mine only needed to come out a couple of turns and now the bonnet opens with minimal effort on the release lever.

The plastic handle is very awkward to remove, I spent around 10 minutes with a butter knife trying to work out how it is clipped in, in the end I bent the metal bracket to release it.
Mine sold on E-bay or I would be able to offer it to you...

The pin position can be adjusted where it screws onto the bonnet by unscrewing the whole assembly. There is a captive nut in the bonnet that has a lot of movement to allow positioning with the slam panel. Large adjustable on the hex shaped spring cup, loosen, adjust, tighten. Set the depth of the pin with a 19 so it just closes and releases once the cable slack is taken up, then with bonnet closed push up and down on the bonnet and take out any play with the adjustable bump stops in the under side of the bonnet. Job done.

....then come down in the morning to service the engine and find the flecking thing STILL WONT OPEN  >:( .....ah ha ha  ;D
