Title: Cold starting issue - Crank Sensor?
Post by: harpersimon on 13 September 2010, 23:22:04
My car sometimes fails to start when cranking.. for a few attempts, then on say the third attempt starts just fine. Other days it starts on the button all day long. Normally I would say failing crank sensor, but thought that would only manifest to non starter when hot. Any other causes of sometimes not starting? (just cranks and cranks)

Kai, a member here, had an issue. Car would never start first turn of the key, and always start on the second, crank sensor fixed it. It did show a code 19 when papercliped.

yeah I think I will replace it - I get nothing on a paperclip other than normal codes - but there have been plenty of cases of failed sensor without codes showing. Off to Euro carparts then..

good point, probably not Euro to be fair, but I can buy the exact same CPS from OEM, rather than pay VX price

OEM is fine (as long as the part is from a genuine source), remember that just because it has 'Seimens' or whatever stamped on the part, doesn't mean it is kosher :y

Had exactly the same problem.  Then one morning she simply refused to go all day.

Crank sensor sorted it.  My man at the fixers said "Gotta be genuine VX"...

yeah sure, when I say OEM, I mean get it from the OEM, as thats what OEM means :-) Vx don't make crank sensors themselves.. I mean a proper one from Bosch, Siemens whoever. example, VX want £80 ish for "Genuine Vx part", my bosch source want £30 for the same sensor, so doesn't have to be 'Genuine Vx' IMHO (at least not in a Vx box  :y)

Do you have a trade club card? May be cheaper than you think  :y

No mate unfortunately not, and I am not anything to do with the general car trade so chances are I won't get one (?) - unless I can blag it via Motorsport avenue!
I called Burnham Garage, nearest me and they wanted £64 something for one, and £92 something for the other, depending which one (depending on the connector / Engine number blah blah)
Weirdly the bloke I called at Euro when I first called to see what sort of prices these were, just found it straight away and had all the car details from the reg. Weird that Vx didn't  unless I just got a numpty on the phone :-)

Well you seem to understand where you can get a cheaper genuine crank sensor (take the guys' advice on this, they know what they're talking about) for the time being, but if you're into Omega ownership for the long term, it's definitely worth getting a trade club card from Autobahnstormers (www.autobahnstormers.org/) by joining them for a year for £20.

Alternatively you could PM andyc, a member on here who can post you genuine parts at trade club prices as he is a parts manager for Vauxhall

Awesome thanks bud :y - I am all for 'genuine' parts but not at dealer prices - I know Vx aren't bad for most stuff, but essentially they and most other manfacs bolt parts together. I have avenues into most component suppliers  as they are the same places we go to get our car bits from - and even if I don't, find that a little research on 'tinternet and you can go direct for alot of bits.
Defo bare the card in mind - hoping I won't have to be buying lots and lots of parts :-)
 Thanks for the sound advice

just to put this to bed and add to the correct diagnosis from all - replaced crank sensor, car started on first crank.
I wired it as best I could away from hot stuff with some slack in the cable for any movement - hardest part was replacing the scuttle panel!  :y
