Title: coolant flushing
Post by: VR4Dave on 11 October 2010, 20:36:40
Hi all, Been flushing the coolant system following oil cooler change, nearly clean now. Just wondering if it's worth running the car with just water in for a couple of weeks before I add coolant as I'm sure there will be some more flushing soon.
Will it be ok with just water in?
Also still getting a warning that coolant is low even though it's not, is sensor knackered or do I need a number of clean starts?
Cheers
Dave.

The "antifreeze" does a great deal more ... it also acts as a corrosion inhibitor amongstr other things. I would not run without "VX red stuff" in .. the cost is quite small compared to the risks IMHO

The level does not require "starts" to reset .. it should go out as soon as the level rises. A new header tank is about £30 inc VAT and is about the most reliable fix... but sometimes a finger in and a good wiggle on the float works for a short time .. :)

Coolant warning is probably a fubarred sensor, needs a new expansion tank, around £30 from Vx.

Don't run just water, it will cause problems in the future. For a quick clean break a dishwaher tablet into the top hose and refit, then top up with just water. Take it for a 15-20 mile cruise then flush it all out again. Should run fairly clean then if you're 99% of the way there already :y

ok, will put some coolant in before i start running her round. Been flushing with co-op bio washing liquid and it's done a stirling job considering that the entire sysetm was full of thick mayo which came out sausage style during first flushes.

You would have loved it whe I connected the garden hose to the small connection on the top of the rad and an offcut of hose to the expansion overflow, turned water on and there was a pressure build up followed by a mayo eruption  ;D  only one witness  :-[
