Hi all,
I am hoping someone can help as i am a little confused, i have had a problems with my car where by the speedo isn't working, i have checked through here and i can see plenty that involve the ABS or TC as well but nothing for just the speedo, I work at a truck garage and one of the techs used to be a car mechanic and he has had a look and he seems to think that there is a sensor on the gearbox for the speedo but when i have spoken to Vauxhall they say there is no sensor, can someone confirm who is right or if they have any other ideas on what to try???
Thanks :D

if you use the trip computer - ie reset average speed, then drive, does that change?
If so could be the speedo unit itself, a firm push to ensure the connector is propely seated may help.
Plus, what are the exact symptoms?
Speedo?
Rev counter?
Mileometer?
Any Lights on?

if you can get average speed info on the trip computer, but the speedo doesn't work, it's the speedo.
AFAIK they cannot be individually replaced , but require a complete instrument cluster.... i've had one fail like this, i seem to recall the replacement being something like £130 or so inc vat. or cheaper form fleabay... but a new one makes most sense....
if you can;t get average speed reading on the trip computer, then it's most often the sensors feeding the abs/traction system, because that's where the speedo derives it's input signal from.
i've never had that fail so i have no idea about complexity or cost... but the speedo change is easy....

Thanks guys for the quick response, the average speed info on the trip computer doesn't work either which is why i thought it may be a sensor somewhere?
The only problem i have is that the speedo and the mileometer aren't working, the rev counter works fine and i have no warning lights on the dash and the trip info isn't working in the trip computer.

I think the signal comes from one of the ABS sensors

NSR wheel sensor. Try giving it a clean

Thanks, any idea which sensor to check also is it actually part of the ABS sensor or is it just attached to it, sorry to sound like a noob but i haven't had the car that long and not really had chance to look around it.

NSR wheel sensor. Try giving it a clean
Cheers Rob, you answered my question before i had asked it, well tomorrow i am going to get the car into the workshop and get the wheel off and check & clean the sensor hopefully that will sort it, just out of curiosity anyone know how much a replacement sensor is?
-
when you switch on the ignition does the abs light come on an then go off after a few seconds,if the light does not come on at all I would suspect the bulb has been pulled which would point to abs module failure as this affects the speedo as well.also when engine is running if you push the t/c button does that light in the dash illuminate?
-
Yea the ABS light does come on when i turn the ignition key and then it goes off, I haven't touched the t/c button to be honest but when i pull it into the workshop later i will test that.

Hi,
Just been out to the car, i have check and the abs light does come on when you switch the ignition on and then the light goes off, i have started the engine and when i push the TC button the light on the dash doesn't come on???

Just for info the sensor is actually bolted into the diff casing so you dont need the wheel off, when I cleaned mine I just reversed it up a pair of ramps.

Cheers Teebee, that saves me some hassle i just park it over one of the pits then :y
