Post by: jonny66 on 15 October 2010, 23:01:38
hello folks, im just wanting some good advice wether to take on doing the cambelt kit change myself or just take it to the garage, im a big believer that if you do it yourself you know its been done properly as long as your competent to do the job. so is it a big job?, the motors a 2.5 v6 manual. would i need a cam locking tool? many thanks,  :) :)

I'm intending to do mine very soon and this place is a superb source of info on the job.  Lots of info on here as well about the cam locking kits and even a DVD is available to take you through the task.

I would definately recommend the OOF DVD for the V6 Cambelt change  :y
Even if you decide to get it done by someone else this time, you will definately be up for doing it yourself next time! ;D ;)

Did my 2.5 2 weeks ago after having Daz through to do my 2.6, if you are a confident DIYer then it is certainly a job you can do. Do not try it without a locking kit, it is essential! Suggest that you get a copy of the DVD from the forum shop - massive help. You will also need a decent set of torx sockets, a decent torque wrench and a cranked 30mm ring spanner along side the usual tools. Go for a VX kit, water pump and pink VX antifreeze if possible. Only trouble I had was getting one of the locking tools to slide between the cam sprockets.  :y

Just make sure you do it properly, tighten everything, and then check again.. Mistakes are costly!!

I would recommend using someone from this site just to make sure!

I got mine fitted properly, but then paid a garage to replace oil seal on crank.. I forgot to check their work and now I've got a dead Mig!!   :'(

Yep, if you can do one with two cams, you can do one with four ;)

(*Not that I've done the Omega yet - but I've done the VG30DETT in the Nissan a few times now.. and there aren't even any locking tools for that, you have to count teeth on the belt to double check it, which is mighty tedious.. 51, 52, 5.. lost count.. 1, 2, 3..  ;D)
