I think my head gasket has had it :( (steam coming from under bonnet, overheating really juddery on acceleration) anyone tell me how much this is going to cost to get fixed? :(

Don't jump to conclusions a bit of info first. Is there any
emulsification inside the oil filler, any signs of that on
the dipstick. Did you see where under the bonnet the steam was coming from.
It could be as simple as a split hose.

Could just be a leak in the radiator or one of the coolant hoses... although the head gaskets will go if you allow it to overheat for too long.
You need some-one reliable to diagnose the fault.

Could be hbv spraying coolant on the dis pac causing a miss fire....
...any signs of mayo on the dip stick meaning water in the oil? Defo hg failed if so, probably not otherwise....probably.

Hi, I am getting mecahnic to look at it today , steam was coming from the water tank and I have noticed the heater not working for a while as well as some overheating so i think i must have been driving with a broken water pump ...desperately hoping its not the hg but seems likely :(

The dipstick is fine but there are small white spots on the oil cap...i'm guessing that this means goodbye car? [smiley=cry.gif]

mayo on the oil cap is quite normal.
its when its at the bottom of the dipstick you have problems.
Dont think you need to condemn it just yet :y

No it doesn't MM ;) emulsified oil (mayonaisse) on the filler cap is normal, it is 99% of the time due to condensation caused by short journeys. If there is no sign of mayonaisse on the sump dipstick, then it may not be the head gasket. I own a 4 pot not a V6, so not too hot on your engine, but someone with more knowledge will be along shortly to help further :y

Thanks guys, i do drive short distances a lot (school run) so I wont give up hope just yet...I really love my car and will be gutted if it has to be scrapped [smiley=sad.gif]

had pas pump changed a couple of months ago but thats it...oil check came on the other day but oil level is fine?

I have the similar problem, :-? car started running funny/running rough/juddering, then overheated :-[, very little water in tank, very smoky (it looked white, but it was dark), filled the oil up (didn't need filling alot it was in between min & max) & filled the water up(nearly empty), still smoky and overheating (on acceleratin the smoke disappeared more or less until we had to slow down at a junction then speed up again then would kinda disappear again til we had to slow down), heater now not working, managed to get it home, left it over night (it was very late) and looked at it today and it is still smoky, greyey (idoling).pale bluey/tinge of blue (on acceleration), their is no oil in water, it doesn't look like water in oil (just seems thin) no "mayo" on dipstick but mayo in the filler pipe, your thoughts would be most appreciated, i'm hoping it's not cylinder head or gasket ;)

If you have a head gasket failure you will have oil in the water (expansion tank) which will look like mayonaise and water in the oil again the same. You will also notice a loss in water. There could be a split pipe in your case and as you have no heat the matrix would be a good place to start. It could be a simple air lock (there is a bleed screw on the radiator under the passenger side bumper) Or a blockage somewhere.

Thats not true mate. . If the oil cooler has given up there will be oil in the reservoir.
Usually if the head gasket has gone there is water loss without traces, missing, if you remove the reservoir cap then start the car water will bash up as the piston comes up if that makes sense, also i have seen water coming out of the exhaust like a hosepipe.
