On the side of my engine bay i have a pipe that comes out from under the radiator goes into a black filter sort of looking thing which has vacuum pipes connected to it the the another pip comes off the other side of this and goes towards the back of the engine. I thought this was something to do with water and cooling but soon found out if i take this pipe off sounds like i have a big bore connected to the back and smells like and exhaust pipe. Can someone please satisfy my curiosity as to what this is and what it does please, Thanks in advance

That is a vacuum tank, and used to help control the multirams, you have one front and rear, and performace will be lacking without it

....and used to help control the multirams, ...
Does a 4 pot have multi-rams James? :-/

Sounds like the secondary air injection system to me.
Helps get the cat up to temperature quickly after cold-start.
Exhaust fumes shouldn't come out of the rubber pipework though, as there's a big one-way valve (round metal thing) in the system to prevent backflow.

thats one way to do things :) i was just trying to see if i could bypass the hbv so i just get hot water through the matrix that doesnt go cold within 10 seconds of turning it on so i dont turn blue on the way to work. More fiddling and fixing i think

Removing the vacuum pipe from the HBV should do this, or have you been there?

i havent yet. i have a week off next week so got some time for fiddling. Hopefully that will fix my problem then can just replace the hose when it warms up again, searched on here and seen how to get to the hbv and im thinking ill prob have to have a few visits to vauxhall when i get round to it as ill prob break everything as normal
