Right, m.o.t. today. Got a kicking (as expected) :-[
Apart from the track control arm, track rod end, exhaust, two bald tyres . . . .the worst bit is excessive blue smoke when warmed up and running :o Engine fubarred in other words. :'(
Its going to be that big scrapyard in the sky for this baby. . . :'( Damm, and I liked it so much! >:(
-
As you say, the engine is the worst bit. Don't give up yet, there are things to try, engine treatments, different oil, etc. I am sure there are plenty on here with suggestions. ::)
-
If you like the car so much I would recommend fitting new valve stem seals :y
There are other possible causes of smoking on a worn engine but they generally make the car sound like a bag of spanners.
Valve stem seals are a quick/cheap fix if you know how :)
-
Thanks for the optomism. :y But they struggled to get it through the test last time. I think it might be the rings. :-/
Already tried Amatech Restore, can't recomend that . . . . :'(
£45 quids worth . . . . :o
Stuff it, time for another one I think. :-?
Anybody got a cheap estate???? ::)
-
Anybody got a cheap estate???? ::)
I have one in the pipeline, V6 though.
-
First things first - are the breathers clear?
Kevin
-
Yes, had the breathers done. Its always been a smoky old so-so. :o
Thanks welung, but it has to be 2.0 or 2.2 due to insurance . . . :-/ There's another story!!!!!
Frankly I have'nt the time or money. Weighed in its worth approx £135. If anybody wants to have a go for the same money, fine by me. Its legal to drive until 1st Nov.
Its a champagne coloured 1999, 2.0, 16v estate. One or two scabby bits. Drives well. Auto box okay for its 157,000 miles. Alloys good, two good tyres. Electrics good, heated fabric front seats. Air-con works :o Windows and sunroof close when you press and hold the key . . . That always impressed me!!! :-/
I'm getting old . . . Perhaps I should look for a Rover . . . ::)
-
have you tried diesel oil in it? i had an old morris minoer which used to smoke because of rings anf the diesel oil helped alot!!
-
Nope, never occured to me.
Mm, perhaps axle grease . . . . :o
Time to look for a new one! :-?

Sure about that? As I understood it, and I am happy to be corrected, once a vehicle has failed an MOT that's it, even if there is still time to run on the exisiting ticket. There may be some grace period for fix and re-test if there is an appointment in place?
Even so, the 2 bald tyres are a couple of FPNs? :-?

Let me have a look around, I may be able to sort you a deal out ;) :y
Wash your mouth out!!!!!! ;D
-
You know you're getting old when you start finding Rovers attractive. ;)
Mmm, nice 75 . . . . . . . :(
I stand corrected with the m.o.t point about failure. :-[
Okay, its alright to be trailored up to and beyond the 1st Nov . ::)
-
Nearly forgot . . . .thanks welung. :y
-
I'm with you, it's legal to drive. It'd be ilegal even if it had an MOT if it was dangrous to drive. It depends what it's failed on.
-
Not sure to be honest, the way the system is these days.
From the top;
Track rod end,
Track control arm,
Holes in centre and front section exhaust, :-?
Handbrake requires adjusting,
The blue smoke from exhaust all the time !!!!!! :o
Oh, and not forgetting the windscreen washer pump has packed up . . . . . :( That stuffs it then..... ;D
-
Oh damm, forgot the two rear tyres down to the markers,
Phew!! :-?
-
Hmmm....its all fixable, but do appreciate why you're fancying a change!
I think it's a definite scrapper, but i know a guy with an estate, seeing him in a coupleof days. Will ask him about it, you may be able to get one decent car from two. That said i think its a v6....are you sure we cant tempt you over to the dark side?
-
Mm, I like being tempted!!!! But it comes down to insurance. A v6 is just out of range after a previous indiscretion . . . . :o
