hi,
car failed mot on near side inner track rod end.
any advice on easiest way to change and an aprox time to do it for a amature?
links, tips advice really apreciated guys
-
take the complete track rod off, (inner and outer track rod) released and do the work in a vice.
use penatrating oil on the threads and leave or use gentle heat.
-
cheers tapper, how long will this take and is it fool proof?
im guesing counting the turns when seperating the two?
-
only count the turns if the new track rod end is identical in length, plenty ppl have done this method with a shorter or longer one and the tracking goes all to bonk.
best take it off as suggested and measure the length before and after. ;)
-
take the complete track rod and track rod ends inner and outer. work in the vice.
some can be tight!

With the complete track rod end removed ... you place it over a camping gaz stove and chant the mantra "heat always wins" over and over, before twisting with two sets of mole grips.
If the place is Newent .. and your name is MarkDTM ... for some unknown reason they then come apart.
If the place is Newent and your name is Entwood ... they don't ..until Mark turns up and then they do ....

thanks everyone will update tomorrow on how it went ::) ::)

Before you remove the TRE use a tape measure and note the distance from centre to centre of the ball joints. Remove and replace the worn end, refit the original end and keep popping the new end out and adjusting until you have the same measurement. This will work no matter how long or short the replacement is ;) :y

if your really stuck and cannot get your hands on a splitter you can "shock" it out with a couple of hammers.
hit the casting the tre fits into with a hammer and another hammer behind it. it then pops out.
