Title: EML on, Mot will it fail?
Post by: ted_one on 04 November 2010, 13:52:05
Advice needed if possible please,my 3.2 is due for an MOT next week and the EML has come on,It has been into my dealership and they said that the diagnostic was inconclusive saying that it could be the catalytic converter but could'nt specify which one or it could be an O2 sensor or the ECU, they told me that to track down what the problem was with the car they would start with the cheapest item first and work through the list, potentially a repair bill of £2300.00! Obviously I'm not going to pay that sort of money out at this stage as the car is running perfectly.Question is, if the MOT inspector sees the EML will he fail the car.

Sounds like the dealer can't diagnose a simple fault to me. ECU? what are they thinking? :o Most reliable part of the whole car, probably, so not a likely failure. I'm not sure who they expect to trump up £2,300 when they clearly haven't got a clue what the problem is, or how to diagnose it properly. ;D

Did they tell you what trouble codes they found in the ECU? If so, post them up, or do a pedal test and let us know what codes it flashes out.

If it's the engine management light it won 't affect an MOT provided the emissions are OK.

Not as far as I'm aware but if the problem is emmision related it may fail the test. Suppose the 02 sensor is guffed the car will likely overfuel or summat. Worth a go though!!

It probably need the Lambda sensors moving behind the cats but find out what codes are stored first ;)

That was my first thought too Pete.

Do the pedal trick in the link at the bottom of my post and tell us what the codes are.

Did they reset the EML and did it come back on straight away. Are you convinced they did anything. If EML has stayed off then maybe it is the common fault on 02 sensors which is pre cat and not an MOT fail.

If you can get  definite reset of codes (i.e. see the reset ) then start from there to be sure you are not the victim of at best a garage that does not understand or at worst a garage trying to cheat you

Nitro - you are quite near to me - if you have no access to a Multiscan or similar I could pop over with mine - but I am not an expert by any means but on this issue I have reset mine a couple of times in the last year.

Many thanks for the advice and offers of help I'll try the paper clip test tomorrow and see wether I can make sense of it.As to the Vx dealer they seemed a bit embarrased about the whole thing, just said what I've already have put on the forum and told me "no charge"and now I'm wondering wether they actually did a proper diagnostic using a Tech2. The EML did go off a few days ago but has since come back on hence my question today.  :( :y

It'll be the pedal test on the 3.2 ;)

Just been out and tried pedal test, seems to be numerous codes showing -tried to write them down but a bit to fast to count and write the missus is on the way home so I'll get her to give me a hand later.

If you need a session with a real Tech 2, then I'm not too far away. Just counting out the codes is all you need at this stage, though, I think.

Use something to record the flashes, even a phone's video function should do really.  Play it back half speed on the computer and it will be easy to record the codes.
