Title: Dead battery, small (for now!) oil leak, tail pipe
Post by: Quince99 on 05 November 2010, 15:39:50
Having read through other threads about battery draining I dutifully checked the boot light (nope) and then went on to the power sounder. Disassembled the wiper/scuttle to allow access and shone torch down to look for bracket nuts only to find that someone else had previously disconnected the power sounder...

That said, are there are any other common causes of battery drain or is the lead-acid lump simply cream crackered? Can't find a date code on it so can't give an accurate idea of age.

Whilst looking around engine bay generally saw some oily marks on front end of what looked like a leg of some sort. Underneath there was a hanging drip of oil on the plastic(?) tray under front of engine. Does this sound like the crank seal I've read about here... not looking forward to expense of that if it proves to be the case. Small amount on driveway - not pleasing the other half there! Once I can move the car will doubtless be cleaning that...  ::)

Oil level seems fine - but needs a change as very black - and some previous owner (perhaps the power sounder disconnector?) broke the loop off the top so had to use pliers to grip the thing! Having done that I looked for a dipstick for trans fluid - is there one?

Only other thing noticed is that the twin tail pipes are black with bits flaking off as if they've been seriously barbecued in an oil well fire. The back box itself seems reasonably sound but the tailpipes absolutely fried to a crisp pretty much.

Does this look like a back box change to lose the baked-on look?

First of all, fill in your profile with details of your car. Saves people asking.

Check camcover gaskets for oil leaks it can and does find it's way to the strangest places.
If leaking here then new gaskets and a cleanout of breather hoses is in order.

There is no dipstick for trans. fluid. See maintenance section on how to check fluid level.    :y

If it is cam cover gaskets and breather hoses (will have to look up where they are in engine bay) does anyone have a ball-park figure for cost please?

Quince, your cam cover gaskets are what seals the covers to the heads and the breather hoses are at the back of the plenium, there are 4 on the v6 engine. 2 large and 2 smaller pipes as well as the breather box on top of the plenium.(The bit with ECOTEC written on it.)These need to be removed and cleaned with copious amounts of carb cleaner. As for the rear box sounds as if the fibers are breaking up inside and pushing there way out, soon you will have a tail dragging behind you and a loss of power due to the gasses not being allowed out.
There is a maintenance guide in the section on breather cleaning and also gasket changes. By the way only use gen vx gaskets and o rings. :y

Also if needed, Darth loo knee is very very highly recommended on here for doing these jobs if you wish. Just have plenty of bacon rolls to hand and learn rick astley songs too. ;D :y

Thank you ffcgary1 for the explanation above. I have looked through the breather thread and plenum removal articles and am thinking I should be stocking up on bacon - this level of work is way beyond my mechanical knowledge. Given the relative complexity it seems quite easy for me to make inadvertent slip-ups causing more harm and requiring more rectification.

Assuming I can get the car started (see gripe about battery!) I have a week away working "dahn sarf" in couple of weeks so if car is running OK then wouldn't be planning any work till after that.

Is Darth loo knee the correct ID so I could PM him and see how he's fixed? Do you -or anyone - happen to know where he's based please?

PS - Rick who?? :D
