..without a full strip down and rebuild of the top end, is there a half decent solution to quieten down the ticking on startup.. it goes away after a couple of mins warming up
Oil change? Flush it? Tappet treatment a la Halfrauds?

Hi,
I did an oil change then I used Wynns hydraulic lifter treatment and then a couple of 1000 mile oil changes.
Not a scrap more trouble, now 52,000 miles further.

I have the same problem,I hate "tappety taps"and I think got it sorted a few years ago when I had my Cav 2L ecotec,in short, I installed a Kenlowe engine preheater and have subsequently plumbed in this super piece of kit to my later motors,all thats needed is a mains power point to connect to, an hour of power up, and you have all the benefits of nice hot engine start, one being no tappety taps. Not the solution for the purist, but nevertheless very effective a big + point, it really does cut down on engine wear,with the help of a simple 24hr timer I can keep miggy nice and cosy in her car port on icy winter nights.

allways seems to be post 98 r reg ones suffer this,i can not use my 97 r for a week,and it still starts up silently,+ my 99 s with same engine sounded terrible after a week of no use,swear its the different oil pumps fault,cannister filter pre 98,element 98 on!! maybee?

not used wynns lifter tonic on the mig but have tried in a couple of cars with good results :y

Oooh, i thought that horrible tappety tap was normal... It is a Deeeeesul after all! Like the sound of the valve treatment, though.

I'll try and change and then add in a bottle of winns to the new oil. Mines a petrol so when it starts in the mornings its most noticeable, doesn't make a peep for the rest of the day after being warm. Love to plug it in and keep it cosy, but I spend alot of time in london and weirdly there aren't many power points on the streets of westminster :-)

I have a bottle of Wynn's ready to use. Just want opinions on when to pour it in - before oil change, (so it gets all the crud out with the old oil) or straight after? (so it keeps working for thousands of miles) ::)

I had the same problem with a Rover 827, seems like they all did it........ ::) ::) ::)

I had the same prob with Rover 827 cracking motor but drove me mad the constant tapping,saw an engine specialist who advised me move it on. sorry to see her go but exspensive to cure if you can,t diy fond memories.

I was lent an 827 for the day once. The most memorable thing about it was it needed a football field to do a U turn in. The turning circle was cr4p.
And massive understeer ....... :-?

I'd be looking with oil filler cap off (and extension tube probably on a V6) how much oil is being flung around inside the camcover from cold-start. Should be quite flicky-splashy, quite quickly, I think.
It may simply be that your oil pick-up strainer isn't very clear, and is resulting in low flow with viscous cold oil.
