 That is for 4 x 5l cans ;)

Why Semi and not fully, out of interest?

Not asking to be an argumentative SOB, honest ;) it's just that I always twitch when I hear 'semi synth' and I wonder why not spend a little extra for fully synth..

 You're slipping J - the grade is 10-40 ;D

Primary reason for full synth is slightly longer life.

Personally, I'd rather change i little more often, and no point using a more expensive oil.  Regular oil changes with a semi synth is far kinder to the engine than less regular changes with a longer life oil.

OK, General Motors 10/40W Semi Synthetic

I suppose I can see that on a non-turbo road car, fair point :)

I suppose I can see that on a non-turbo road car, fair point :) Depending on the turbo, still valid.  For a diesel, definately. For a high performance petrol turbo, I'd probably change the priorities on life/performance/properties.

I had a feeling that would be a link to one of Guy/Simon/Tim(I think?)'s posts ;) (Incidentally that's where all my oil comes from ;))

Indeed - the MR2 gets fully synth from Opie, changed every 6k and/or after an extended session on track .. but it sees a hard life given it's putting out anywhere between 50 and 100% more power than standard (depending on how far thered mist descendswick gets turned up) with an oil-cooled plain bearing turbo :)

Anyway, I digress - can't argue with the price of the GM oil on the trade club, for sure.

The synthetic 5w30 is good stuff too, and about 60 odd quid for 20L IIRC. Worth a try if you can live with a 30 weight oil.

That's definitely what I'll put in the Omega soon - not sure I can get away with it in the MR2, but I'll give it a try once I fix the oil pressure & temperature gauges :)

GM 10w 40 is in mine as recommended by fellow members :y

I thought that 5w30 was the current recommendation from GM these days?

I think Kevin may have been referring to me and my 'other car' when he said 'if you can live with' :)
-
Yep, the 5w30 is indeed the recommendation for the later Omegas on 20k service schedules (although I'd never let any car run that long on any oil) ;D.

£20 for 5l retail at local stealers. Half what halfrauds ask for castrol. :o

Just serviced the Vectra, £55 for oil, plugs, sump washer, oil, air, pollen and fuel filters. No point buying non gm bits at that price :y

more like double that! It's about £31 retail for 10/40, 5/30 is more expensive

Yep, I nearly bought some from a dealer that didn't do trade club once. When they told me the price of just 5L of the 5w30 I made a swift about turn and beat a hasty retreat. :o

On trade club it does take some beating, though.

 Kevin
Thought as much, just remembered a previous post from some time ago.

Agree that I wouldn't let a car run 20k miles between oil changes.  As I only do 5-6k miles a year it gets done annually irrespective.

I should say, of course, no problem running these engines on the 10w40 either as long as oil change intervals are appropriate.

I dont like to leave mine in that long - as soon as it starts to darken, time to change :)
