Title: HAND BRAKE SEIZED
Post by: MARK020 on 15 November 2010, 19:17:35
Driving down the road today when I heard a screeching sound from the back of the car. When I took my foot off the throttle the car slowed as if under braking (not coasting). Also, the handbrake lever has less travel now. Any hints on what to check or how to sort it will be welcome. :-?

Go through the guide in the maintenance section...

Don't adjust the handbrake cable, make the adjustments after completing the guide with the adjusters...

usually the easiest way to tell if one of the brakes is binding is to feel the wheel, if its hot/warmer than the rest then you have found the culprit.

you can pull the lever back to release the handbrake by hand (from underneath, without need for a jack)

i had mastered the art of this when my old omega's handbrake used to jam on.

to fix it you will need to replace the springs that pull the handbrake levers back (on the backplate of discs)

and may need to lubricate the handbrake cables.
