Title: Video of Breather Cleaning
Post by: x25xe on 31 December 2006, 00:25:42
Further to the success of the Cam Belt DVD, who would fancy a DVD of breather cleaning?  I have a car that could be used and I also have a camera and the necessary software to edit and make the DVD.  Obviously, I can't do both though.

What do people reckon?  Is it worth it?

Its well worth doing. Its so much better when you can actually see what's happening. Your missus doesn't need to go to night school and become a mechanic, I'm sure she could point a video camera. :)

.....and, of course, if you fell out big time while you were doing it, well, even better viewing ;D

Nice!!!!!  ;D ;D ;D

Seriously though, I would have a little trouble with this as I am, somewhat thankfully, single!  Maybe I could set the camera up on a tripod or something.  I will have a think.

To save using a tripod ive got a spare wife (you might have to deliver twins mid session mind  ;D) or i could lend you my 2.5 that needs breathers and ICV cleaning  :y

Funnily enough we had been thinking about this and a few other things.

We are looking at putting together a DVD of various servicing tasks.

Crank sensor replacement
Breather cleaning
Rocker gasket replacement
Rear brake service

Any others?

You should Include removing and cleaning throttle bodies when doing breather DVD.

Also could consider:

HBV replacement
Instrument panel /MID removing
Gearbox oil level or change
Droplink replacement
Wishbone replacement
Track rod replacement

In rear brake service, include handbrake adjusting - that is something that appears to always be done incorrectly.

I will willingly offer a car for autobox fluid change/handbrake/diff oil etc etc etc and stuff my face whilst watching the experts do all the work ;D

OK, how about we all produce a small video of some piece of maintenence, and send off to someone to compile into a comprehensive DVD?

Getting Marks_DTM to check it has been done right first ;)

OK.  This all sounds great.  I think that the other things that have been suggested to video are spot on and very worthy of the time to do - it will greatly help people on here complete these tasks.  Not sure if DIS pack replacement could be included

I am very busy, so I cannot give, I am afraid, loads of time.  That being said, I would be more than willing so come along and film these procedures and then edit the footage onto DVD.  Dates would have to be agreed in advance so that I can make sure that I am free.  If there is someone else lined up for the filming, I would be happy to help out with the spanners.

I also have a donor car by the way, should a car not be available.  This requires the breathers cleaning (still) gearbox fluid etc.  It is a 1998 miniface lift.

The only downside to this, as far as The Boy is concerned, is that I have a S**Y camera.  Sorry about that.

Seriously, I would be more than happy to help out here - a small way of repaying the free help and advice I have had on here and also a good way of contributing in some way to make OOF even better!

OK, just thinking out loud here......

The next sort of 'meet' seems to be the Power Station thing at Drax.  How possible or practical would it be to combine all/some/small part of the above at the same time?

I have no idea as to garage facility, tools, etc.  Just a thought?  Certainly intend to have my 1998 minilift MV6 there, if someone clever wants to give it a quick once over.....

I agree it would be great, I intend to attempt this for the first time next weekend in effort to remove the burning oil fumes - be nice to drive with the windows closed..  I'll be using the written guide on here for help, but a video would be awesome..

Hi ClarCE,

You and I must have been seriously damaging the local atmosphere (I'm in Woolhampton).  Did my camcover seals last week.

Completely agree on the dvd.  Rear brake stripdown inc handbrake show replacement is something I haven't stumped up courage enough for yet - video would be great.

Cheers
Ian

Every morning I feel sorry for whoever has to drive behind me!

I've ordered all the bits I need to do it with now, and after seeing a couple of strip downs on sat I'm going to have a good crackat it, hopefully this weekend all being well..

Good luck with that then.   Having seen it done should help a lot.

I took lots of photos before disconnecting pipes which helped a couple of times on reassembly.  I definitely recommend changing spark plugs at the same time as access is much much better.    Also I never did manage to disconnect the throttle cable.  In the end I left the throttle housing on the car and cleaned that in situ.

Cheers

Ian

I had a quick go at taking that off after reading about people finding it impossible - mines the same, it aint budging - I might try again later it's one of those things I need to walk away from so that I don't muller it after losing my rag!

Photos sound like  good plan, I was going to use my marker to identify where things need plugging back in afterwards!

A DVD showing the suggested jobs would be a fantastic idea  :y :y :y

A few stills in there, for reference would be good too.

So, it seems that enough people are up for this how about we arrange it sometime?

We would need:

1.  A donor car (or two) - mine needs doing ;)
2.  Somewhere to meet and do the work
3.  Someone who would film the action (either Martin or myself)
4.  Someone to edit the footage and produce the DVD (again either Martin or myself)
5.  Someone who actually knows the procedure and who is willing to do the work on a car or two.
6.  The correct parts including the black sealant.

Whilst I can provide points 1, 3, 4 and 6, I can't provide a venue I am afraid and my "workshop" is the street outside!

Over to you guys!

Great idea. :y I certainly wouldnt mind paying a reasonable price for a how to dvd. The topics are endless.
I have no doubt it would leave Haynes standing.(Not hard) ;D. Lets hope it gets off the ground. Happy to help or donate my estate for "surgery" ;) if in my area.

Sounds like a plan. OOF: the director's cut.

That way you could buy the lot, use the "OOF football match" one as a frisbee / mirror for checking your timing marks and keep the rest for reference. :y
