Title: Engine Oil for diesels
Post by: tomoco on 23 November 2010, 13:07:43
Just been down to Vx to get a 4 pack of oil and some filters. While i was there i asked about oil for my neighbour's Tdi Vectra. The counter guy said i can use the same oil (10w 40) Is this correct?
I thought Diesels had a different spec oil :-/

Actually I just noticed something - Vx sell two kinds of super-synth, one suitable only for petrol engines and one suitable for both petrol & diesel..

Oil - Longlife Super synthetic 5W30 SM/CF A3/B4/C3 dexos2
Designed for both petrol and diesel Vauxhall engines that meet the new Euro 5 standard, dexos2 is recommended for servicing model year 2010 vehicles. Ideal for the latest engine technologies, and compatible with alternative fuels (LPG, CNG, BioDiesel), this is the next generation in engine oil.

5 litres      93165557      £43.45      £36.93      £17.79

The semi-synth & dino oils don't say, so I presume they're only for petrol engines - but I could be wrong, maybe they all have the extra detergents these days :)

I'm pretty sure that the 10w 40 is fine just increase the service intervals maybe every 3-4k :y

The initial question was: 'Just been down to Vx to get a 4 pack of oil and some filters. While i was there i asked about oil for my neighbour's Tdi Vectra. The counter guy said i can use the same oil (10w 40) Is this correct? I thought Diesels had a different spec oil

My understanding is that the 10W40 Vx oil is useable in a diesel engine because it meets the diesel specs of ACEA B4 and API CF. For example my wife's 2004 diesel Corolla's handbook says any oil meeting a spec of ACEA B1; API CF can be used (with 10,000 miles or 1 year service intervals).

I use GM 10/40 in my dads transit 2.4 diesel. Quite a few quick changes to flush it as he hasn't done it for about 4 yrs!!!!!!! I think most oils will be ok in most non hi performance road vehicles. It's better than no oil change and crappy old oil!
