Title: CLUNK! Was that the diff??
Post by: Diamond Black Geezer on 24 November 2010, 21:11:24
Just reassembled the rear suspension, after replacing springs. As most will be aware this requires removal of driveshafts at the hubs, rear trackrodends, etc.

After a little drive, under decent acceleration from a near-stop there was a loud clunk from the rear. This was heard a few more times, always under acceleration.

Anyone got any ideas, or suggest any known problems. Is it possible Ive managed to put the driveshafts in wrong, is there some slop which has just manifest itself? Im out of ideas, really.

Cant seem to make anything knock whilst under her, and to my knowledge everything was nipped up to a pretty tight degree when we did the job. Could go away, but could remain, and not the sort of thing i want clunking whilst Im telling people how smooth, and qui-KNOCK-et omegas a-KNOCK-re!

Thanks in advance, good gentlefolk of Old Ooftown.  :)

was it just the springs you changed? or did you replace any other rear suspension parts?

would suspect the donut bushes first, depending what you removed

Just the springs, sir.

Seemed more metallic clunk, rather than a dull rubber-damped thud.

not sure who told you to go to that extent to change the springs, undoing the bottom shock mount and levering the rear arm down with a long bar lets you pop them out and back in, no other bits need to be taken apart.

bit late now I guess  :-/

Did you tighten up the tie rods securely, as any movement will result in a clunk, similar to that on the front end if a balljoint is gone, failing that check the hubs again.

Will check the tierods, as you say this is a possible candidate, though sure all was nipped up, like i said.

Still, worth checking.  :)

No need to remove the drive shafts to change the springs, all you need to do is drop the diff and so on.

when my diff broke i heard a clicking noise from under the car which increased with the road speed,  at first i thought it was a stone in the tread, the clicking became a knocking after time, i replaced the diff and found one of the driveshafts was stuck, the CV had broke inside it and no matter what i did i couldn`t free it so i bought a complete driveshaft with CVs as i couldn`t find anywere that just sold rthe CVs.
i agree changing the rear springs is quiet an easy job as long as you can get good access under the car

Done springs before, but took my advice from a guy who strips Omegas for a living.

Found the 'lever the wishbone down method' a pain to relocate the holes once finished. Has no one else found that difficult?  :-/

Use the maintenance guide  :y

Easy for all that way.

Key thing you need to do is re-trace your work

I appreciate the help, though the majarity of post replies (7/10) are comments on the method of spring removal, which doesnt actually help me solve the knocking sound.

Thanks to vauxfan2k, mrgreen and tommycon for your help. Nothing else has been changed, will check the donut bushes, tierods are nipped up tight, and suspect not the CVs, but will check them.  :y :y :y

Yes, I followed the maintenance guide, it was so easy, a few bush nuts, the diff bolts, the diff then drops and the springs can be removed with no effort.

I had my diff go later on, there was a clonk alright, the front bearing had disapeared and I got home with keeping the revs up and left foot braking, cause if I didn't the whole assembly oscillated up and down  :P :P :P
