Title: Windscreen replacement help!
Post by: smithpa7 on 30 November 2010, 17:39:42
I seem to remember that most people recommend Autoglass for replacing a cracked windscreen.
Can anyone remind me what type of screen is the best, was it a tinted graded screen???

autoglass are really expensive imo, i scoured the net and made phonecalls and got someone to come to me from leeds to replace and fit my windscreen for the grand total of £99  ;)
think autoglass quoted me £300+
that is if you are paying for it and not going through your insurance?  :)

A heat reflective screen is best from Autoglass, and certainly get it on your insurance if you are covered ;) ;)

Tinted graded is the top part of screen-usually green :y

Thanks for you quick replies. I certainly will be claiming on the insurance. I believe the excess is £70.
The car hasn't moved for a week, it was buried under 18 inches of snow, when I brushed it off the screen was cracked across the full width :'( :'( :'(
So a 'heat reflective, graded tint windscreen' it is :y :y

All the omega's ive had with factory screens have had dark blue bands across the top.

seen some nasty ones with a gold/purple reflective tint, doesnt look right at all, think some renault lagunas had them from the factory.

They are, and heat reflective if you specify the later screen.  That is what my current, and last Omega had  ;) ;)

Got to Autoglass at 08:00 this morning for my new windscreen. I was very impressed with the service :y :y

On arrival the fitter showed me the screen he was going to fit, a nice heat reflective, tinted screen :-* :-*
He informed me it would take an hour to fit and one hour for the screen glue to bond. So off I went to McDonalds for a Breakfast (Yuk :o :o) The free wifi was good though. I went back after 2 hours and it was ready. No glass, no mess and mobile phone aerial correctly fitted.
I can highly recommend Autoglass. They were professional when I was booking the car in. Free coffee on arrival and car waiting at the door when it was ready :) :) :)

was it an actual autoglass company, or a contractor that does work for autoglass, cos some of the contractors are hit and miss, even tho the screen and price (from autoglass themselves) may be reasonable.

Glad it all went smothly for you tho, any chance of a pic of the new screen?

Interesting you should mention if it was a sub-contractor. It was done by Belron UK, trading as Autoglass. The screen is a Pilkington screen.

I have just taken a couple of pictures. I haven't worked out how to attach them. They are on my PC hard drive currently.
