Good place to start. Have to remove parcel shelf partly to access it

i've just noticed this a few moments ago in my car.. if i tune a radio and it hasn't got a strong signal when i press the heated window button i just get static, but on a verry low volume static. on stations with strong signal i don't have this problem yet there is a small static noise on the bacground with heated window turned on. what is wrong with this?
p.s. its raining outside.. i didn't noticed this when the weather isn't wet :|
p.p.s by interogating google i found out that by haveing the heating lines interupted can do this.. i have 3 heating lines on the rear window that don't work :(
-
I get the same problem on mine aswell, but mines an Estate.
-
If I'm not mistaken, some of the Omegas use the heating element as an aerial, so if you have damaged tracks on the element this may well be the problem.
-
Not on mine, it has a roof mounted airiel.
-
i have the damaged tracks but my antena is on the roof.. not in the rear window because mine is also an estate :)
-
you can buy conductive from maplims
and i thought ariel was for the phone

My understanding is that the aerial on the roof is for fitting a mobile car phone and the heated rear screen does indeed act as an aerial which is why this problem occurs. I have this problem occasionally on a saloon and it does seem worse in damp winter conditions. One possible cause is a poor earth but it can also be caused by interference from a dealer sticker stuck on the back window across the heating element. The sticker can get a bit shrivelled with age and trap moisture between itself and the heating element of the window causing static. Try taking any dealer sticker off the window if its sitting over the track lines and you may get a bit of an improvement. I have to say that using the heated rear window as an aerial is a pretty poor system, a standard traditional aerial works quite a bit better and doesn't require an amplifier.
-
i am 100% that the antenna on the roof works for all the systems because it got stolen from the car and i had very very poor reception on the radio whenever i got out of the city, bought a new antenna and the radio worked like a charm again untill i started to notice this static :(. on rear window antennas there are some vertical lines too.
p.s. no sticker on mine

The stubby aerial on the roof is definately for a car phone. The heated window element is used as the aerial and this problem of static is quite common not just on the Omega but quite a few other cars that use this silly system. Because the heating element can only produce a pretty weak signal an amplifier is used under the parcel shelf and the whole system seems quite prone to interference.

what is the parcel shelf and why do you think the radio went down when the antenna was not present?? anyone who has roof antenna on a caravan can try this and see that without it the radio reception gets pretty bad
-
Perhaps the radio uses the rear screen and the roof aerial.
Also I think the aerial signal amp is only used on am or mw, not fm...
-
what is the parcel shelf...
The piece of trim between the rear window and the rear seats, usually refers to saloons only.
-
so where is the amplifier in estates??
-
Its behind the rear door tailgate panelling in front of where the licence plate would be on the door (if that makes sense). Access by removing the interior panel.

Think you will find guys that stubby aerial on saloons is for phone and radio reception is through heated rear screen. Years ago i had a new Omega saloon and even that when new gave poor radio reception when heated screen on on wet days - solution tune to Radio 1 :y
The larger aerial on Estates is for radio.
