Title: Laptop memory

SWMBO's laptop only has 256mb memory so I put another 256mb in but it's still only showing 256, any ideas?

That's what I was thinking but the seller assures me it's the correct type, however he also said to take the original out & swap them but it's not removable.

Also, when playing with memory (or any electronics, but memory seems ultra prone), wear an ESP strap.


And before all the posts start how you all do it and never had a problem, you just think you got away with it.

Yup, ESD damage can take time to appear.....

And if you have an ESD strap, do regular continuity tests on it, or every time that you get it out if not used often.

As mine only comes out every couple of weeks, if that, I meter on every use :y

Yep, you can guarantee it'll show up in 10 years time when you get a BSOD and a subsequent memtest86+ reveals all :D

Yep, you can guarantee it'll show up in 10 years time when you get a BSOD and a subsequent memtest86+ reveals all :D
Software tests frequently dont show up memory faults ime.  Strange BSODs (forgetting duff drivers) do tend to be RAM (or PSU if its a cheapie) IME
