Title: Strange handbrake
Post by: megaomega123 on 15 December 2010, 16:17:25
For a while my handbrake has been under the armpit and only just holding.
I know how to sort it, just not had the time. A few weeks ago I parked and the handbrake came up about 4 clicks and held lovely. Did it twice then went back to its old slack self. Today it has done the same 4 clicks and holding 4 times so far.
What does this indicate?

That it is poorly adjusted and the cables may be so slack that they are getting snagged somehow.

You need to follow the OOF guidelines on adjusting the handbrake and shoes to the letter for a proper result:

I thought about the snagging theory but dismissed it on the basis that it holds very well and evenly. If the cable was snagging then the shoes wouldn't reach the hub inner??

I suspect one or more of the shoe retaining pins has come adrift allowing the shoes a bit more freedom, at times the expander is pushing the shoes apart, at other times it's slipping past the end of the shoe.
