Title: Knock sensor
Post by: mrjimbo on 05 December 2010, 20:20:10
Last night on my way home last night the emissions light came on as i was coming down the slip road off the dual carriageway, it only stayed on for about 20seconds and then went out and stayed out.
When i got home i did the paperclip test and it came up with code 16

16   Knock Signal Circuit 1

I can't get rid of the fault code but the emissions light is staying off.
Could one of the knock sensors have failed or be in the process of failing or is this a symptom of something more serious.

Does "Circuit 1 " refer to the drivers side bank or passenger side bank or does it mean something entirely different ?

Is it easy to change or is a real PITA job ?

drivers bank, check wiring not snagged on aux belt etc.  The sensors themselves are mega reliable.

Found the problem :-[

When i did the cambelt recently, the knock sensor cable ahd become pinched by the auxillary belt tensioner when i put the tensioner back on  ::)  i couldn't see it was pinched until i took the tensioner off to remove the knock sensor.

I've done a temperary repair for now as i can't get a sensor for a couple of days, hope it lasts until the replacement arrives  :-/

I will report back with the results  :y

16   Knock Signal Circuit 1

This is the same error code after I scanned. I believe this can be a DIY job since all the explanations here refers to a pinched or snagged wire.

Just to share, I am experiencing a slight delay in moving from stand still position. When I give it more gas it then moves smoothly.

Question is where is this located? Car is a 3.0 MV6. Appreciate the help. Thanks.

It's on the engine block behind the altenater undeneath the drivers side exhaust manifold. It's easy enough to change, just a PITA to get at. Auxillary belt needs to come off and the tensioner, top bolt has to come out of the altenater and slacken the bottom bolt and swing the altenater away from the block and the knock sensor is just behind where the altenater was. If you get a mirror and have a look you'll see the knock sensor cable, it's held to the block by a couple of hook type clips, follow the cable back under the exhaust manifold. It's held to the block with one E14 bolt.
When you put the new one on bolt it to the block and put the cable in the clips, put the top bolt back in the altenater and tighten the top and bottom altenater bolts, the cable has to go behind the auxillary belt tensioner between the tensioner and the block, make sure you don't pinch the cable otherwise you'll need another knock sensor   :y

mrjimbo,

Unfortunately I am tooooooo far from any of you. I am in the Philippines and I've got the only MV6 here. Thanks

Just to report on progress.  Finally got to do this knock sensor thing.  Yep its a PITA job indeed. But I found no snagged or bruised wire. I removed the sensor itself and gave it a good cleaning with contact cleaner and a slight brush with sand paper.

Well no more check engine light.  When I scanned the MV6 no DTC were found anymore.

Thanks guys.
