Title: What strength antifreeze?
Post by: Martin_1962 on 20 December 2010, 20:08:34
Lost most of it - about £8 worth in 1/4 mile.

If the cooling system is 1/2 full and topped up with water how effective  will the mixture be?

Well below the recommended strength for the temperatures we're having now Martin I would have thought! :o Best to top up with at least a 50/50 mix, erring on the side of generosity tbh  :y

Only got water here now - I could underfill to VX IF they have any.

Car is about 50% and about 1/3 to 1/2 filled

If you can manage without the car I'd leave it as it is?  At least what you've got in is the correct ratio.  :y

From memory a 50:50 mix gives protection down to -40 Deg C, 25% is about -15 Deg C so a little to close for comfort at the moment

Especially bearing wind-chill factor in mind.  You might be okay parked up, but as soon as you move the rad may freeze up before the thermostat opens.

Plastic bags on feet, hobble 1/4 mile to neighbours car, drive to local VX dealer, drive back, wlk back last QM while a few people were digging the road out.

Car is OK now but I can't get off my drive, spade is lost in garden

Sounds like a golden opportunity to fully drain it, flush it, then fill with fresh 50:50 - which will see you good for the next 2 yrs :y
