I have a '97 2.5 TD CD and was wondering if there are any major cautions when removing/reinstalling the inlet manifold? http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1253127118/0 explains a little about inlet manifold removal but i don't want to bugger my car. i plan on removing the alternator and trying to repair it before i buy a new one. i have never done much wrench work under the hood but I work on jet aircraft so I have some maintenance skills. thanks in advance!

Its easy to remove but I would get the 6 paper gaskets first, they aren't expensive ;)

Oh and some paint stripper and a toilet brush to clean the manifold internals out, you'll see what I mean when you remove it ;D

hopefully i can get ahold of the paper gaskets....already got some brushes and engine cleaner ready to go ;)

just be a little careful when removing the rear nuts at the back of manifold, if you drop them they go behind the starter motor and are a pain to get out!! ;D

Vauxhall were useless but Land Rover had them in a couple of days ;)

so i decided to give it a go without taking off the inlet manifold. off and on rain has been a PITA. got the 2 mounting bolts off and the belt off....but was having trouble with the wires on the back. thick red wire and thinner black wire going into black plastic that looks like a ?connector? couldn't find a release latch and couldn't pull it out (though i didn't want to pull very hard) then it started to downpour on me.
also, when messing around with the wires i thought i felt a small shock. kinda funny cuz it took me a few to figure out what that familiar feeling was ::) i have the battery completely uninstalled.....maybe i was just paranoid about the shock? heard they are live wires but meh the shock brought back some memories haha
ps....i took a few pictures to post when i'm finished

Take the belt pully of in front of the alternator and pull it forwards :y

Another to watch out for when re-fitting the manifold is that you don't trap the sensor injector wire between the manifold and the block.
Been there....!!! ::)
To allow the alternator to be removed upwards, bend the battery tray up. It's surprisingly pliable and can be easily bent back to shape.
To remove the alternator without doing this will either involve the removal of power steering pipes if backwards and radiators etc if removing forwards.
