Title: Handbrake adjustment
Post by: cube on 23 December 2010, 10:09:03
Hi,
since my handbrake doesn't now hold the car, even when pulled up and almost in the boot !! How do you tighten it up please ??  :-?
Is the adjustment done inside the car or underneath ????

TIA

It sounds like the handbrake hasnt had any maintenance or adjustment in a long time.

Agreed,  sounds like it's beyond adjustment. Time for a complete service.   :y

Silly question (??) but once i've cleaned up as per link, do i need to fit a new cable, cos i'll get one before starting, or will i be able to re-fit old one.
Depends of stretching i suppose ??????

What should the cable length be ???

Cheers

Not always necessary to fit a new cable. Once you have checked and maybe replaced shoes there is plenty of adjustment on the star wheels.

No idea the length of the cable   :y

best to check hand brake every year min shoe is 1.5mil think, but would check the drums as they can go (rusty) and then they need replacing. £50 seen cheapist. but dont know how good they are.

Cable stretch is a myth.

There's an adjuster under the car, close to the middle next to the exhaust. And as already stated, there is also an (star type) adjuster on each individual drum.

May I suggest that before you go ordering any parts, you whip one of the rear discs off and check to see how badly worn the 'drum' part of the disc is.
