Title: Odd suspension clunk only when cold...
Post by: Peevee on 31 December 2010, 13:07:44
Hi all,

I've noticed over the last 3 weeks that my Omega, when cold and when going over a speed hump, pothole etc that I get a crashing/clunking sound from the near side front [and to a much lesser degree] rear suspension. It only happens when the car is cold! If I drive around the block for 5 minutes I could go over any pothole, speedbumps at normal speed and no noises whatsoever would come from the suspension. Whenever I've had similar issues in the past in other vehicles its been the bushes but then when it was the bushes or drop links the noises came regardless, not just when cold. There doesn't appear to be any leaks with the shocks... but I wonder if it's possible the valving has completely gone inside the shock and then when the shock foams up inside, the pressure is such it stops the noise?

Aside from the noise, the car's handling is behaving as per normal... i.e. it's tramlining [has done ever since I bought it 4 months ago]. And I have had the tracking done for camber/castor/tow-in/out etc. which massively reduced the tramlining so I just think tramlining must be an omega thing... and my tyre pressures are checked. All are at normal pressures and no unusual or uneven wear on the tyres.

Any and all guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks all!
Peevee

Jack the car up and look for play in the wishbone bushes by wiggling the wheel from side to side and up and down motion and also feel for any movement in the steering idler/track rods and drop links :y

when cold the rubber gets hard and doesn't absorbe the shocks that well, so probably thats  why it clunks only when cold
