Had to leave the car V6 2.5 CDX T reg at a local garage (not my normal one though) as it was dying. Steering heavy, voltage light on and eventually temp guage went off the chart.
Local garage man says he can fix it and will do it before NYE but said it'll be expensive to do the work ?
As an approximate guess how much would a non Main Vauxhall dealer charge for this, incl parts + labour ?

Where in the country are you? There might very well be someone very local to you who would be willing to lend a hand.
I can't see why it should be very expensive. :-? It'll take someone who knows what they're doing no more than an hour from start to finish. Has the tensioner failed? Or is it just the tensioner roller's bearing that's gone? If it is, then it's available on its own. The whole thing is only held on with two torx bolts if in the unlikely event that it had to be changed. I've no idea of the costs of the tensioner, but a Vauxhall belt is just under £20 +vat using a Trdae Club card. :y

Apparently the tensioner has sheared off ??? if thats what I understood him to say (during a rather garbled mobile phone conversation). I'm not too worried about paying a fair price its just that I dont know this guy from Adam so dont know if he's kosher or not ?
It worries me when they say "It's going to be expensive when they dont even know how much the parts are yet ? ::)

Simple job but a bit fiddley to get to the tensioner bolts, say £50 in parts plus .5 to 1.0 hors labour tops? If they have to charge the battery perhaps. Still a fair bill but don't let them take the pish.
Tensioner itself rarely fails, it's the baring in the pulley itself that gives up usually, and that is available separately.
Get a quote before they even touch it IMO.

Unfortunately I'm miles away from you, or I'd help. The tensioner is top left as you stand facing the car, so if you get the opportunity to look under the bonnet before he starts the job, you might have a chance to verify what he's said. The tensioner bolts go from left to right on the left hand side of the engine.
As said, it should take no more than an hour to do the job.
I doubt whether pattern parts are available so you could phone Vauxhall for prices.
I wouldn't drive your car as it is at the moment though, cos as you're (now) aware, your water pump should be driven by your fan/aux belt.

OK People thanks for the comprehensive advice and the offer of help Andy. As Chris suggested, I left a VM message at the garage asking for a quote for P+L before they get down and dirty. If its way over the top I'll ask my regular guy to pick it up after the holidays and take it back to his workshop instead.

I wouldnt pay any more than £120 including a new tensioner and belt.

I guess an ad in parts wanted/for sale on jeer might get you a tensioner? Can fit it yourself outside the garage gates then ;D
Maybe post the add in test zone and ask Jimbob to move it for you? If suits?

Maybe Mr Local Garage spotted a newbie who wanted a job done quickly whereas I didnt but just wanted the vehicle stored safely somewhere until the work could be done.
I quoted stuff from your suggestions in my vm message so I just have a feeling that now he knows that I know what he knows we'll get along nicely.

Now this is another fine example of why I joined forum. I wished I was aware of it when I bought my first and present meg. :y :y ;D
I purchased repair manual and thought thats all I needed together with willingness to learn and my tools. That was only the start.
If anyone is interested in motor vehicle engineering, I purchased several years ago the following: " Fundamentals of Motor Vehicle Technology" by VAW Hillier, which I use as a referrence to learn in depth about various topics than what Haynes provides.:)
There is an up to date edition, which should be on amazon.

if its the tensioner itself i have one on my other engine if you want it they are simple to replace just a bit of a sod to get to without taking everything off round them

my tensioner was £50 plus vat didnt need it though only need pulley :(
