Title: drop valve
Post by: sotmh on 03 January 2011, 13:19:53
Can anyone shed light on what is a drop valve (unless taken literally) is please.
How caused & end result. Never heard of this  before.

The nearest thing I can think of is cambelt coming off and pistons hitting said valve and ending in tears and lighter wallet. >:( >:( :( (. Sounds a totally different  thing all together.

"Dropped valve" usually refers to a valve that has failed, usually in spectacular fashion. Often the valve spring breaks or the collets fail allowing the valve to fall into the combustion chamber and make contact with the piston crown. Also valve stem and head can seperate causing the valve head to drop into the combustion chamber.
Most cases of Dropped Valve are caused by over reving the engine.

historically, a "dropped valve" was the result of the top portion of the valve breaking, causing the valve to drop into the cylinder.

I suspect that the guy is using this as a generic phrase to cover valve head breakage due to valve-to-piston contact.

anyway, the result is never good.  Two engine parts trying to occupy the same place at the same time invariably end up occupying a side-by-side position in the sump.
