Title: Jobs and problems
Post by: cube on 31 December 2010, 21:12:07
Well i thought world domination was next  ;D

Jobs completed today

1) New front disc's n pads (Mintex) fitted n working  :o
(Only cut hand once !!  ::) lol)
2) Reverse light socket fitted n reverse lights now work  ;D

Next job, figure out why i had to stop and refill the water expander, temp light came on and temp gauge at max !
EML now on  >:(
Engine runs like a bag of spanners on tick over, mysterious yellowy watery/oily (??) dripping onto driveway. Can't tell for def where coming from but i'm aware of small oil leak on rocker, got gasket for that job  ;)

No mayo on dipstick or on oil cap.

Yes i'll get it on a coder asap.

Any oil in the expansion bottle ?

Can't remember seeing any oil in the water expander, it was almost clear, with a hint of very very light brown (no antifreeze) before having to refill it.

Check for oil/water in the spark plug wells.

Right, where to start

Taken plug assembly out
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y170/Dax163/IMG_0293.jpg)

Oil was pouring off  :-?

Took number 1 plug out (nearest to bumper)

At least 2 inch of oil  :o

The spark plug its self is ok, but yes i'll change them once oil problem sorted

Any suggestions  :-?
TIA

I hope you drained the oil out of the well before you removed the plug?  :o

Cam cover gasket needs changing, easy peasy job on the desmond but make sure you use the genuine seal and o rings with the black sealant :y

Into the combustion chambers of the engine - be prepared for lots of blue smoke from exhaust for a while on start up

This is probably a stupid question, but is the Cam cover gasket, also known as rocker gasket ?????
 :-?
Title: Re: Jobs and problems
Post by: Welung666 on 01 January 2011, 15:10:27
Yes but this is offically the cam cover as it covers the cams  ::) Rocker covers are on the older OHV engines ;) :y

Yep got nice blue smoke from the car now  :(
lol.

Do you think with the symptoms as mentioned it'll just be the cam gasket alone or the hg also need doing ???

Am just thinking to go the whole hog or not ????

The gasket i got isnt a OE, the code on the packet is VRG.016S, bought from local motor spares shop.

That is a Tomic part number. Manufactured in Poland. It'll last but nowhere near as long as a genuine gasket. No need to change the head gasket. You need the black sealant though to seal the corners of the half moons and front riser corners.

Thanks for your advice and offer mate  :) i appreciate it.

Just to add... did it come with the O rings as well? If not you'll need to get them as well. Only tighten the cover down to 8nm when refitting as they will continue to leak if you over tighten them :y

Yep came complete with the o rings, you've just reminded me i need to treat myself to a small torque wrench, a late xmas to myself  ;)
lol lol lol

Thanks again  :y

While you're in there check your HBV, most likely source of your coolant leak.   :y

I've found the hbv link, reading actually lol, am i looking for leaks at this stage or looking at replacement ???

Title: Re: Jobs and problems

Looking at your first picture it appears to be coolant dripping off the coil packs.
Primary suspect HBV. Replacement is the only option. Unless you can see anything else i.e. split or loose hoses.

Its oil dripping mate on the coil pack

Well I have just had a look at this for cube and there is a lot of pressure in the cooling system and a distinct smell of exhaust fumes in the header tank, so unless these engines have an egr cooler which I dont think they do I am putting my money on it being the head gasket. Just need to find somewhere near Bradford to get it skimmed

Pressurising of the cooling system (particularly before the engine is hot) may be caused by a failing head gasket.

Have you done a compression test? If the readings are still normal  then I would want to get the head off and inspect it for damage before deciding it needed a skim.

Haven't done a compression test, but then again you can often get a good reading even with a failing gasket. From the amount of bubbling in the header tank I am guessing it has blown between the fire ring of one pot and a water gallery

4-pot tends to go @ waterjacket on #4 cylinder

I am guessing you are right :( (you didn't mention the bubbles)

RobG I am guessing you are right, just found a picture of the headgasket and it looks like there is a water channel very close to number 4 pot. With it being that close I think a skim is in order as a couple of thou distortion would lead to it going again

I have the same problem. How do you drain the oil from the well ?

Later I will change the cam cover gaskets.

Several options really:-

Are the 3 wells on the same side connected to each other ?
Or do I have to drain each plug hole ?

Sorry. Shouldn't laugh. I have a Rover V8 engine that boils water quicker than my kettle, so I feel your pain.
