Title: facelift autobox in pre facelift?
Post by: robg1984 on 11 January 2011, 17:10:15
Hi all having problems with the autobox in my 98 elite, checked fluid levels and all ok the problem seems to be that the torque converter\clutch (if there is one!!) seems to be slipping and wont let me engage or bangs into gear which then gives the dreaded auto gearbox warning.
Im in two minds whether to see if i can strip box and change the parts see if it works or fit a new box which would be a hell of a lot easier! and if i changed the box would a facelift box fit and would it need a tech 2 to change software or wou,d it just be plug and play as it where.
sorry for the essay but any help and opinions would be fantastic
cheers
rob

The best gearbox to fit would be a 3.0 one but you'll have to use the bell housing off the existing gearbox, you'll be able to chip your engine then as well ;)

If you can't get a box local let me know,i've got one here from a Facelift Elite i've just broken ;)

If you need to swap your auto box, now seems like a good idea to replace your AR25 with an AR35 from a 3.0
I believe you'll need to retain your bellhousing though to mate the gearbox with your TD lump. You'd be OK to chip your car then.  :y :y

mechanically preface lift & facelift are basically the same. As said, your 'new' gearbox will need the old bellhousing to mate it to the engine.
Just chip it, she'll never know ..... if you don't tell her! ;)

Mine did but when the wheels spin in 3rd gear on a damp road its a bit of a give away  ;D

As said you'll need to change the bellhousing which will need the TC taking off and a new seal fitting. Otherwise a fairly easy job. Be warned the AR35's a very heavy so obtain a strong friend to help you ;) :y
