Title: Inactive Members.
Post by: amigov6 on 15 January 2008, 21:33:07
Looked through the members list from day 1 the other day & noticed how many members logged on months ago but have remained inactive since. I understand not everyone's as talkative & involved as some of us & may need help sometime but maybe 1 post every month (even a newbie welcome) to keep their membership active might sort out the dead wood.
     Just a thought. :-/

It would be great if every member was as involved as the more active of us, (I presumptuously class myself as active), but experience has taught me that people get different things from this sort of activity, and that there is always a high level of 'background' interest and involvement. I don't know what the percentages are, but I bet very little change could be effected, especially as there is no cost involved in remaining 'dormant'.
It's a pity, but a fact of life IMHO.

This is my first post so please excuse any mistakes.  I joined a while ago but haven't felt the need to post until now, although I read the forum every day and enjoy the banter between you and the variety of subjects discussed in General Chat.

I don't drive an Omega but an ex-boyfriend had one and he used this site, which is how I got hooked, and I have to say I've actually learned quite a lot!

What about sending an email to the inactive members and no reply would mean deleting their accounts?

I don't think that you should ever decrease your registered user
base.

You don't know how this site will evolve in the future. A lot of sites
start out like this, and then, because of the specific user base, they
start to attract internet advertising, tailored to the user base.

Ie Insurance, Spare Parts, Custom Parts, Engineering Services, Google
etc..

The higher the registered user base, the more likely the site is to
attract revenue, and the price charged for 'Banner' headlines etc..
increases.

Never give your assets away!   ;)

Not implying or indeed suggesting anything, however avenues are being discussed and considered by mods at the moment which could easily further expand the facilities available for members, be they active posters or those that simply prefer to look and learn...    :y

Load of sh1te being talked here. If you delete the accounts of 'inactive' members, you'll end up with about 150. People will use the forum when they need to. A lot of people are losing sight of the fact that we are here to help. The general chat section, great as it is, is not the primary function.

Correct.

And there is no intention of 'culling' member accounts whatsoever, be they active or inactive.  Posting does not give a true representation of actual use....

We already have one person answering to this thread who had a previous connection with things Omega and remains an active 'viewer'.  You are most welcome, Jo!!

i agree with you ,we are on here because of the cars we drive , its good to "talk" its better to help but you  cant excommunicate someone if they have nothing to say

As Hotel21 says, no intention of removing old accounts.

Some people like to come on here and chat about Omegas and everything else. Some like to lurk, looking for info, and find what they want without have to ask.
Title: Re: Inactive Members.

I am one of the earliest members on here and yet my post count is quite miserable compared to other people who joined at the same time.  Then again, others who joined at the same time have fewer posts than me.

What we all have to remember is that old arch enemy - time.  Most of my posting is done at work :o as I do not have a great deal of time out of work.

Using myself as an example, people tend to post when they have time  and / or an interest in a particular thread or have a question or need assistance with a particular issue.

I do enjoy reading the various topics and the banter in general chat, but rarely join in as I am not good at cracking jokes etc.

I tend to lurk in the general help section, but generally people have already beat me to it when it comes to answering!  This is indicative of the quality of this forum.

Post by: Crazydad on 16 January 2008, 19:15:09
I too have noticed how many Inactive members we have, but does it hurt?
Why even think of deleting members that have not been active for a while?
As STMO123 has already said, the General chat site has got nothing to do with the reason the Forum is here, its just an area where people like me talk a load of rubbish, and have a laugh.
Although this is part of it, the main thing is to help each other with our Omegas.
If a member decides to sit back and just read then thats their choice.

The only resource inactive members are taking up is a little disk space (we have plenty) and, on the very rare occasions we sent out broadcast emails, a little bandwidth occasionally.

A long time ago someone gave what seemed like good advice; if you have nothing to say, say nothing.

I have probably just gone against that advice, but never mind.

TB has hit the naill on the head In my case, and a lot of other ppl presumably,I kinda lurk and read the forum.I've found it immensly helpful in doing repairs, servicing to my my miggy ie breather pipes clean, fuel filter change and rear brakes servicing.

All in all it is an excellent forum for miggy owners.
The admins deserve a resounding cheer for the way they organised and run this.

Hi to all, whilst I do pop in for a quick read every now and then, I rarely feel the need to log on every time that I do.  I'm sure this is the same for virtually all forums, you'll always have the 'hardcore' members who are online & logged in on every visit.
What I like about this site is the vast knowledgebase there is and the very helpful members who have helped me and probably hundreds of others keep their omega's running sweet whilst not reliant on VXL's stealers.
Ok, I probably would re-sign again if my account was deleted purely because of the above.   :y
Let's face it, there is nowhere else on the web where you can get honest, accurate advice without charge about the old barges we all drive and long let it remain that way!  ;) :y

Hi all just popped in for my usual evening read and like many others maybe feel a little guilty about not posting regually. I do tend to just stay logged in so when PC is on I presume the forum shows me as logged in. I suppose that I am a bit lazy and enjoy just reading and learning but would not hessitate to offer advice if I saw that somebody was strugling and the usual experts were not on line or replying.
While here a massive thank you to regular helpers as I would estimate that this forum has saved me at least £1500 in dealer labour charges since joining.
        SO THANKS AGAIN
Guess its alright to shout that.   ;D ;D ;D

Hi,  I am a new member and I will probably be mainly a lurker just looking and learning then applying the knowledge gained to good use when working on my Omega.  I hope to be able to help occasionaly but virtually every problem posted appears to be answered almost immediately and I have only limited time in the evenings to get access to the computer.  This is just how it seems to be in most clubs/forums, there are the dedicated hard core group who do most of the work and get involved with socialising etc. and the rest join in occasionally when they feel they have something to contribute or need help with a problem.

The last thing I want is yet another company trying to sell me yet another load of Cr*p. I am having enough getting BT stopping sending me emails, despite having complained twice, and sending credit card apps to my old address that I haven't been to for 3 years. No wonder there is credit card fraud. I would not like my details here to be used for any comercial purposes AT ALL, and would leave immediately if this were happening.

Personally I think non-active users should be removed, BUT - a non-active user is one that haven't logged-in in a long while, not one with zero post count... a user who logs-in every now and then but does not post is fine with me. Also, I would define 'long time' as maybe a year or two, i.e. we can safely assume that if someone hasn't logged-in in a couple of years he ain't coming back... some people sold their meegas and lost interest, while other may have died... of boredom.. reading my posts....  :P  did I mention I have a toothache?

Valid point, automatic exclusion after 365 days maybe...  do "0" users clog up something in the workings somewhere?  If not, why bother?

Before we lose sight of things, to reiterate an earlier set of posts.....

There are no plans to remove any old member accounts.

There are no plans to introduce corporate sponsorship whereby personal details are used.

There are, however, initial general thoughts/concepts between mods as to what other enhancements we could add to increase usability, such as a 'shop' concept.

If anyone has thoughts on what they would like to see added/removed/improved, please feel free to use the suggestions thread.

Fair enough.  Its the profits from the sale of such things that go towards the costs in hosting, domain registration etc.  Anything else other than that, TB or LB66 are the chaps to answer that more fully.

Our current hosting arrangements mean our overheads are low, and hopefully are covered by DVDs, stickers, and other merchandise.

I know we will make nothing from tax disc holders, as they really are sold at cost (give or take a few pence). If I get my way, this will change!

Costs not covered have been swallowed by the Admin Team for the following reason:

We believe that all information should be available for free.  This means we cannot charge membership.  We are against the idea of 'tiered membership', so any voluntary subscription or financial donation is not going to work.
