Ive had a quick search on here regarding the correct oil type for an LSD. Instead of buying the GM diff oil and adding the correct additive specific to the LSD, can i just put generic LSD oil in it like this?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Castrol-B373-LSD-Diff-Competition-Oil-Race-Rally-1L-/270688385683?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3f0648fa93#ht_1415wt_905
And before i put the diff on the car, are there any checks i can do to test it? I wouldnt want to fit it only to find i have to pull it out to rebuild it.
-
If the diff's out of the car I would remove the backplate and check it visually for wear. Also check the seals for signs of leakage. Might be wise just to change these before fitting as it's a lot easier on the bench.
Also check it hasn't got too much backlash.

Not sure about that oil, by the way. The normal recommendation is BOA90LS from Opie oils.

Yep, back plate is already off the car. Ive spun it round, and cant see any wear to the crown wheel or pinion, but thats all i can see as the clutch plates are still in the case. How do i go about checking backlash?
Yeah ill replace the output seals, as one is a bit wonky. Is Vauxhall the best place for these?

why would you risk a perfectly good lsd?? ppl are asking around about them and you risk yours with some noname oil. the genuine gm can't cost more than 20pounds on a trade card with aditive that is specific for this kind of lsd.
-
I dont have a trade card. The LSD additive was a bodge by vauxhall as it wasnt cost effective to stock specialist LSD diff oil after their original stuff ran out. So they supply standard GM diff oil of which you need .75 litres then you have to add their 'special' lsd additive .25 litres. This increases the viscocity of oil to make it work with the lsd clutch plates. So its actually Vauxhalls bodging and im thinking now it'd be better to just use quality after market stuff. Just found this out by reading up on the Carlton forum.
-
I have an LSD in the race car which has now stopped working after I did that. Could be because of something else i accept, but there you go
-
I've always used Castrol LSD oil and had no problems upto now (20+years)

Because you used an after market oil? or the GM blend?

there are ppl here who could help you buy with a trade card. all i was saying that it could be hurting it :(.. what i wouldn't give to have an lsd in my omega.. i'd say bye-bye to situations when i am stuck in the snow and balance it :P )
-
Thats fine, the last thing i want to do is destroy it! Its taken ages to find one!
-
my point exactly.. they aren't easy to find. are you going to use it for competition purposes??
-
I use after market oil with GM addactive (cost only 5£ with out TC) work fine so far
-
BOA90LS is the current favourite oil for the LSD as covered in the diff oil change thread.

because i used after-market i think

Just out of interest, which oil did you use? That way i wont get that!

I've very recently had an issue with my LSD (yesterday) and ordered these from Opie Oils:
Silkolene BOA 90 LS High Performance Gear And Limited Slip Differential Oil -1 Litre
REDLINE Limited-Slip Differential Friction Modifier / Break-in Additive -0.118L (4 US Fluid Ounces) Bottle
They'll both be here tomorrow :)

Whats that stuff do then?

Thanks for that, interesting reading. Ive bought some Fuchs Silkolene BOA 90LS Gear & LSD Oil 1L Race/Rally off ebay. Going to put that in and see how i get on.

I might be wrong, but I thought the BOA90LS already has the correct friction additives?

I think so. The additive is there to reduce temps during initial running of a new diff, where the clutch packs and bearings are tight and you get higher than normal temperature.
-
Not like the GM additive which is just a viscosity modifier. Again this is just info ive found reading the internet, so as with most internet knowledge , it could be complete balls!

I thought so too .. Paul is probably best off giving Opie a bell though if we're not 100% sure; Simon/Guy/(I'm sure there's a third fella) will know I'm sure.

Too late lol
It all turned up this morning, looks like the diff oil has the slippery stuff in it already! Never mind, i have some spare for the Rs box then :y

Opie is always quick on the delivery :) But I meant call them before putting it all in the diff ;)

Ahhhh... Well the plan is to do it on Sunday as the chatter is getting every so slightly more noisy, so ideally i would like to get the oil in there asap.

After some considerable googling I found a discussion surrounding the clutch-type LSDs in Subarus, and the BOA 90LS was the recommended oil for those (with no additional additives needed) :y

Just in case anything goes wrong.. it's not my fault ;D But yep, that was as good confirmation as I could find - the Silkolene website shows only bike oils and their datasheets are .. not much use to me :-/
