Title: auto gearbox light???
Post by: clinton on 25 January 2011, 21:25:57
hi everyone
i have a 2.2i auto

i changed my gearbox oil and filter on the weekend, took it for a short drive and all was fine. the following day on the way to work it started lagging and the oil light came on.so went straight home.i checked the oil levels (im assuming it is ment to be level with the bolt on the side) which it was so i assumed it must be an air bubble from changing the oil and filter,so i added a bit extra to compensate. after driving about 50km that day the car sort of "burped" briefly and all was fine and the light went off so i thought great, untill today and about 300km of driving, the light has returned. i went straight home and check the level again,it was slightly overfull (judging from the bolt again) so returned it to just full. does anyone have any insight on this problem. the car is performing fine and changing normally.

ps. i used regular atf,i know some boxes are funny but the gearbox guys assured me regular atf is fine(did they lie?)

thanks  :y

your right with the fluid being level with the bolt on the side but you have to check the level with the engine running and the car level too :y

Describe the 'auto gearbox light'? :-/

Is it the one shown in the top right of this picture? If so, read the text. :y

Or is it the Oil warning light?

there's no warning light/message for low level of

the gearbox, there is though for the engine oil.

Have you checked the engine oil level?

You really need to get hold of a code reader (OBD11 compliant) as that light is telling you there is an emmissions fault & a code/codes will be stored in the ECU pointing you in the general direction of the fault/faults. The reader plug is behind the drop down fusebox door under the steering column. If the catalytic convertor was buggered then the light would be flashing rapidly all the time, not just on constantly. If it ever does come on like that, it means the fault will rapidly kill the catalyser if not attended to ASAP!
