You can normally find a set of markings on the belt that will work, but they can be fitted without reference to the markings if not.
If the cam timing has slipped, you need to rotate the crankshaft back (anticlockwise) to 60 degrees before TDC, rotate the cams back into alignment with the timing marks, lock them with the tool again, then bring the crankshaft back clockwise to the TDC position before locking its' position and fitting the belt.

I concur with Kevin Wood. Must rotate engine back ANTICLOCKWISE to avoid valce damage.
Chances of valve damage already?

Zero if the crank has not been turned

Hi.
Had the same problem as you when i was changing my belt.
Following the DVD from here he was lining all the marks up but when i tried mine none of the marks on the belt were in the right plage even though the new belt was the same length as the old one.
Got my mechanic friend to have a look in case it was the wrong belt but he just fed it onto the pullys even though none of the marks were in the right place but everything worked fine. I think thats what years of experiance can do.
P.S got my belt from autovaux.

Done 6 or 7 v6 cam belts now, none of the belts had any timing marks on them.
Seems to me it's one more thing to have to line up. :-? It makes no odds what belt teeth sit on what mark and it's all to cock after a revolution anyway.
Really wouldn't worry about belt marks IMO.
