Title: Oil change Interval?
Post by: Omega_Dan on 05 February 2011, 17:21:47
What interval should i change the oil and filter when im only doing about 1200 miles every 3 months?

I was planning on changing it every 6 months or every 2500 miles.

Is that a sensible period or am i being over cautious?

Edit: Was last done 13th october at 40033 miles now on 41452.

I believe a consensus on the OOF makes it wise to change your oil and filters every 3,000 miles with Vx 10/40 semi synthetic.

Certainly my V6's have never run better on that oil change programme! :D :D :D ;)

No, get yourself a trade card £20 for the year and buy the VX semi synth and change every 5-6000 miles :y

Every six months on my two miggies. Use genuine filters and Vx semi-synthetic 10-40.(Trade Card)

Trouble is I do very little miles at the moment so neither is doing more than 200 - 300 miles in the six months!!

Very aware that lack of use is probably worse than high annual miles.

You want to see the faces at my MOT station when they find that the mileage has hardly increased year on year !!

Ill stick with every 6 months then based on my low mileage per annum.

Cheers for everyones opinions and experiences :y

I am sure the recommended oil & filter change interval for my Omega is every 10,000 miles and the timing belt 80,000 miles. When I got Omega the service record showed the first 6 oil & filter changes in 64,000 miles. I do about 10,000 miles a year so I just keep changing them every year. I don't think it's doing the engine any serious damage.

I also noticed in this thread that the 80k in the service book for the timing belt is wrong. I changed mine at 80k and now it's at 155k, so I expect to do it again in 6 months. What timing belt intervals are others using and how many have experienced failures before 80k? Are there any warning signs such as squealing from the tensioner before it fails?

Timing belt WAS 80,000 to please the fleet buyers ... but then discovered that the tensioners fail .. so the interval dropped to 40,000 / 4 years ... if yours is REALLY that old it is running on borrowed time .. if the tensioners go you arelooking at 2 new heads/valves at a minimum ....

For the cost .. get the belt done ..... yesterday !!

You're on borrowed time re your cam belt. Vx changed the interval to 40k for the cam belt.
When you're on the motorway at 3000rpm you have about 0.00025 secs notice before your valves make contact with your pistons.
You need to make plans to change the belt ASAP, you might make it to 160k but how much will it cost you if the belt doesn't make it that far?  ;)

Back to oil change interval. You can now get Vauxhall semi synthetic 10W40 & fully synthetic 5W30 for £12 - £20 for 5 litres.

I would suggest that if your car has a recommended 10,000 change interval & if you diy the changes; then the optimum strategy for long engine/turbo life is to change the oil twice a year & the filter once a year. Ideally something like March & October so the oil gets changed immediately after the winter months. A lot of protection for little cost or effort.

The 10K oil change interval is rather optimistic, especially with the 10w40 oil, so I would agree. I'd change the oil filter every time, though. For the price of them it's not worth skimping, IMHO.

Exactly, DIY costs about a tenner for an oil change using GM parts. My oil gets changed every 3 or 4 k  :)
