Title: HID Self levelling
Post by: Raymond on 08 February 2011, 21:29:01
I know I have had the car a while but this has always played on my mind. Should the headlights go through a self levelling sequence when turned on? My mates BMW HIDs go up then down then seem to find their level.

Mine sometimes does it if I turn the lights on first and then start the car, there go down then up.

Funny thing. Mine have never done it either....UNTIL tonight.

I installed two "new" complete light units from a wreckers....first time they switched on after about 5 seconds they both dipped briefly then popped back up and settled to pretty much perfect...weird to watch.

That said, STILL get the field of vision warning.

On to the sensors next ?

On both saloon & estate - switch lights on and they go up to "driving" level.

My lights have never done that. The reason I remembered to ask was I had the airbox out the other day and noticed some vacuum lines going towards the headlights and I have one that is clipped to the metal chassis under the plastic cowl that you remove to get into the headlights but it is not connected to anything. Does anyone know what it is for?

Or could it be the cars with self levelling suspension don't do it?

They wont move on mine when the car is turned on.
Although if you switch the car and the lights on and then press the car lights down will move slightly and you can hear the headlights motors kicking in

They only do it when they see a significant voltage drop (e.g. cranking engine on a poor battery) and you wont notice unless the lights are on

What he said, I thought there was a problem with mine when my battery was on its way out

You dont want them moving around too much or the adjusters will snap  ;D ;D ;D

These things seem to be made with a quality that would shame even Lucas.  :D ;D :D
