Title: Rusty Exhaust Tips....
Post by: twiglet on 09 February 2011, 15:27:02
I'm fed up of looking at the rusting exhaust tips on my F/L 3.2 Estate!

Trouble is, apart from the tips, the exhaust system is sound, and is nowhere near in need of replacement!

So I'm thinking that some nice chrome tailpipe trims would be a low-cost option to smarten things up! However, I DO NOT want it to look tacky or chavvy in any way, some ideally the design would be a close to the non-rolled end, slash cut profile of the OE pipes.

Just wondered if anyone had any advice or recommendations on where I might get such things??

Thanks in advance!  :y :y

Have a look here. Not the cheapest but very good quality. 20th one down pretty sure that tip is almost identical to the omegas. Only downside is you will need 2! ;)

I got some chrome trims very cheap from Aldi/Lidl. Think they were £7. They still look fine. They would still look fine if I cleaned them.

Interesting! I bought a genuine VX rear box over 3 years ago and the twin tailpipes appear to be stainless steel and they certainly haven't rusted.

You must have got one of the last proper ones like me, ones you get from GM now are no better than KiwkFit  :(

What I did with mine, was to sand off all the rust and brush paint  on 2 coats of galvafroid zinc rich primer, which is a thick, high build anti corrosive paint that actually does what it says on the tin, followed by a light sanding to erase the brush marks, followed by 2 coats of halfords satin black spray.
No need for the satin black to be heat resistant, as the tailpipes do not get hot enough.
18 months later, and all is OK :y

LongLife and Powerflow do their own range of exhaust tips to suit customers preference. Probably costly though. Not sure if they would sell just these and no idea of cost but it might be worth a look. They may do one that will slide over your existing tips quite snugly. Only downside is that they are intended to be tig welded on but I'm sure you'd sort something out. You should be able to view the available tips on their website. :y

Thanks everyone for your help and advice.  I shall continue my search..

I have spent quite a bit of time looking on ebay, but haven't been able to find any that match the OE design.  The Aldi/Lidl option sounds interesting though... Cheers KW!

I might give the a rub down and repaint in the short term... Just need someone to write a how2 on how to remove a F/L estate rear bumper (I think the current how2 is for a pre F/L).

The trouble with the Aldi & Lidl offers is they are only on for a few days and they usually sell out very quickly. If I recall correctly the tailpipe trims were an Aldi product. It might be worthwhile giving them a bell to see if they have any in stock.
