Title: oil filter stuck same old same old!
Post by: Impact Pete on 16 February 2011, 15:02:36
Just doing an oil change tried to get the old style filter off and the whole barrel is turning, (yes it was only put on hand tight)
about 4000 miles ago darthlooknee did an oil change and it took him awhile to get it off last time but as the light was fading then we deceided not to do a conversion on the oill filter and he can vouch that the cap was only put on as it should be and not with a ratchet!
Well I'm stuck any ideas how I can get it off, it's on ramps at work so access is limited and I have a short time before I need to fill the beast back up and go home >:(

hey mate.
sorry to hear your in a mess...

I haven't had the barrel turn on my omegas before, but did struggle to get the cap off.

All I can say is try improvising.  Grip the barrel and twist in opposite direction?  Like water pump pliers/grips etc.
WD40 on the join that you're trying to loosen too.  And hammer it a little to break the seal.

Hope you get it sorted.  Do you have the stuff for the "normal" oil filter conversion?

Sorted!

Got a long 5mm thick steel flat bar, tapped it gently between the barrel and the engine and used the bar as a lever to hold the barrel still and used a very long breaker bar to free it :y

Wish I had the convertor bit here now! ::)

Nice! Glad you got it sorted buddy.

Yeah I think I will do the conversion when I do my service in the next week or two!
(That's if I can get mine off! ;) )

In my excitement that I removed it, I realised I put the sump plug in with out the sealing washer but was pleasantly supprised that you only have to undo it slightly and slip over nut, I though I was going to have to drain it all again !
Cleaning the breathers out again amazing how just after 6 months they are bad again! might explain the rough running when cold
