Title: Juddering and shuddering on cold start
Post by: Eddi on 20 February 2011, 17:16:22
Hi all,

On a cold start, everything is fine until after about 10 seconds of the engine running.

If stationary, the car just judders and shudders (like a learner kangarooing - but perhaps not as violently!).

If moving, upon acceleration there might be nothing or there might be burts of acceleration then the opposite for the first 200 metres of driving or so.

If it did it all the time it would be undriveable, but it just does it on cold starts (with sometimes varying severity) for the first 2-3 minutes.  It's like it's coughing/spluttering and then once slightly warm it's fine.

Fuel blockage?

Petrol or diesel?
Doesn't really make a difference... it sounds like the e.c.u. isn't registering the fact that the engine is stone cold and therefore not putting in extra fuel to compensate. The e.c.u. uses various sensors (oil temp, coolant temp, possibly outside air temp or others) to determine if the engine needs cold start.

Yeah petrol.

Yeah ECU sounds more accurate as it is a consistent problem.

Looks like this could be a lengthy diagnostic process.
