hi. Has anyone ever put a uprated clutch in? I'm wanting to put a better one in as i tow a lot an the cheap clutch i have in now slips when it gets a bit warm. There is a place in leeds that will recon my disc with kevlar racing kit which he says will make it a lot better. Has anyone had any experience with these

Diseasal+towing = a two pedal car ::) ::) ::)

one problem with that is 2.5 td tractor will ripauto box to bits unless it's the 35.
-
If the current clutch is a "cheap" one would it not be better to try a better quality standard part before going through the pain of trying to modify things?
I am sure the standard clutch would have been plenty man enough for the job even when towing.

it's only 40 pound to uprate my old clutch. Better than 200 for a new clutch.

Never heard of that before. Didn't know you could "upgrade" a clutch plate. If you do it, let me know how it goes... I've tried looking for performance clutches and there's a distinct lack of performance parts in general for the Omega. :/

maybe because you don't get 1700kg performance cars. ;) ;) ;)

lol true.
does it really weigh that much? thought it was a little less... interesting

its more then 1700 kgs with driver and full tank of fuel

I was told basiclly that if I take him my old disc he will re do it with a Kevlar racing material, He could also upgrade the springs in my plate though that would be a extra cost.
When I have looked in the past there are a few American places that do upgrades for towing vehicles an they do the same.
I`ll let you know what its like when I change it. Might be a few weeks yet though before I get chance

The problem is - do we know what the problem is with the current clutch?
I could imagine a couple of issues which might cause an otherwise sound clutch to slip:
Poor friction material on driven plate
Surfaces of flywheel / clutch pressure plate glazed
Oil / coolant contamination
Insufficient clamping force from pressure plate
Actuating mechanism not releasing fully
and so on..
Replacing the friction material will only correct the first in the list, and only then if the kevlar offers a higher coefficient of friction than the current material. It could well be that this material is superior only in that it will withstand a higher temperature, for example. I don't know.
If it's got to come apart anyway, I would be addressing all the possible causes while it's apart rather than adding another unknown (non-standard friction material).

it only starts to slip when i have been shunting the caravan or trailer around the yard. There is a bit of a slight incline an when i'm reversing the van up slowly on an off the clutch it begins to slip. I let it cool down ten minutes an it is good to go again. I could leave it in an it would be fine but i want it to be better when i'm towing. I stripped it down about a year ago to put this cheap clutch in and there were no other problems like you listed

first off your plate aint got springs!!!so i would question this guys expertise, and i would not want a refurbed plate from past experience(bad) usually balance problems
on mine i just put a 3litre v6 plate in it fits just in the flywheel, and over the last
56k including towing a twin axle van all over spain has never given me a moments trouble, still going strong :y

I thought the forks on the plate were springs that pull the the plate tight up to the disc and flywheel???? When the clutch is pressed the release bearing pushes the forks and dissengages the gearbox from the engine unless it is a pull type clutch and then it pulls the forks to dissengage?????
3.0 V6 clutch sound a good idea.
The bloke who does the clutches, He has 30 years experience making them for rally cars, I know a few people who have had suburu`s giving out 350+ bhp an they have had clutches done by him

the n he should have known you have a dual mass flywheel(DMF) WHICH USES A FLAT CLUTCH PLATE WITH NO SPRINGS IN IT, the springs are replaced by the two piece flywheel which allows a slight amount of give to remove the judder, and give a smoother system, its debateable whether or not its better than the old system with springs in the clutch plate itself, its certainly more expensive when it dies!
as said 3 litre clutch bolts straight in takes around 2 hours to do if you have the tools and the knowledge, and assuming your DMF is serviceable!! :y
-
The pressure plate does have springs which apply the clamping force (although not of the coil variety).
No cush springs in the friction plate though
-
The flywheel is fine, I changed the clutch last year and there are no judders.
To be honest the bloke who does the clutches does high preformance cars. I told him what I wanted as my clutch slips when I have to manouver the van an he said the kevlar plate material is the best for high tempratures.
think it maybe worth a try for £40, I`d be doing the job myself anyway so there is no labour an it doesnt take that long to change really

cush springs!!! that was the word i was searching for when posting and could not for the life of me remember!! so worked round it!!
-
So which do you guys think would be the best way forwards?
Wish I could get a truck twin plate!!!!
-
well the 3 litre clutch is a known upgrade infact vxhall did it themselves on the later cars, its easy to get and takes away the uncertainty of your upgraded clutch plate? and i wouldnt just rplace the driv en plate its false economy get a new pressure plate not matter which way you go, it will grip better!!

My assumption is that they are not needed because the dual mass flywheel does the same job (at 100 times the cost ::)).

Does anyone know if the mv6 3.0 clutch will fit the 2.5td?????
-
I don't really know much about DMF, not heard of it before. No doubt a bit of wikipedia/google will help :)
Whilst on this topic, what are the options for light weight flywheels on the omega?
I've been looking around and it seems you can use an aftermarket one for a Vectra B, combined with a different clutch. Anyone know any more?
