Title: Temp Gauge Not Reading Whilst Driving!!!!!
Post by: Jim on 21 February 2011, 17:11:08
Last night I drove from Glasgow to Gloucester, When I first started the car and drove the gauge went to just about the normal working temp after a few minutes, but when I started to drive on the motorway the temp gauge started to drop and would not give a reading, I pulled over at the services and after a few minutes the temperture gauge started to give a reading but not as high as the normal working temp and I checked the hoses which where warm, I started to drive again and the gauge dropped again, I turned the heating on to full it was warm but it wasn't as warm as I would expect it to be (picture below)

Any Ideas??? Thermostat stuck open??

sounds to me like your thermostat is stuck partially open

Jim,

First thing is to look at the live data from the CTS and see if it corresponds with what it should be.

Chances are it's a dodgey connection on the spade-connector to the probe that feeds the temp gauge.

Are you still in Gloucester?

Almost certainly the thermostat. Gauge is clearly working as it warms up when the car is stopped (less airflow through the radiator) and then overcools when moving fast. :y

Hi Jim, I've got exactly the same problem with mine, I have the 2.6 v6. When I drive mine the gauge will get warm and will get to 80deg, when you put the heater on it drops dramatically. It also drops when you drive on the m/way. Its really weird. I've checked allsorts - no leaks, no creamy stuff in the oil or water, engine seems to run fine. Top hose gets hot when I think it should. Bit of a mystery, if I find out the answer ill let you know & visa versa  ;)

Had pretty much the same going on last summer, it's a long shot but I flushed the coolant through 5 or 6 times and put the correct mix back in and have been running it ever since with no problems.
But mine might be more to do with the fact the oil cooler went the year before that and even though being flushed through then I think there was a lot of oil creamy bits floating round the insides of the pipes and I reckon it was partially keeping the thermostat open, but mine has completely righted itself now.

Hope you sort it
