Title: Re:Ignition Barrel Release
Post by: 350sb on 20 February 2011, 15:20:12
Hi Guys,
After finding that my ignition is broke last week, I'm having a problem releasing the barrel. Another problem is that the steering is locked. I've looked at the guides on removal and recondtioning, but how do you remove the barrel with the steering locked, as I can't turn the key to position 1?

You may need to remove the barrel housing, it's held on with security bolts that shear off when tightened so they will need either chiseling or drilling.

As longs you have the key you WON'T damage anything and don't need a hammer or chisel.
Just behind the steering wheel at the back off the barral you will see a tiny hole put the key in the ignition and turn to position 1 put a small allen key in the small hole and push hard then at the same time pull the key and the hole thing will come out.link bellow.
before you re-fit you need to push the steering lock back inside the collum

However...
Having read your original thread http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1297608742/22 it appears that you can turn the key in the barrel :-/

The problem is that my barrel is broken inside and the key won't turn + the steering is locked. My last option is to drill the barrel itself. Is there a way to unlock the steering without going for the drill?

I haven't had to rescue the lock barrel on an Omega but assuming it is the same as my Carlton and Astra...............

The lock body is held on to the underside of the steering column with two bolts with heads that shear off when they are fitted. What is left are two domed heads. Using a new, sharp, centre punch (and plenty of patience) I managed to create a punch mark and then undo the bolts.

With the lock body off the steering will be unlocked. When you have the lock in your hands you may see how to fix it without drilling :y

Still, shouldn't the key be able to turn?

Keep trying to turn the key use plusgas  or WD40 or graphite  and key not quite fully entered whilst trying to turn steering wheel ,  sometimes it will release, mine did

Yep, seconded. It's much easier if you can get it to turn just the once, so keep lubricating it. Also try inserting the key and tapping the end in the hope that you might dislodge any sticking levers. Try pulling the key out slightly while turning, also try pushing it in a little harder, just in case the barrel isn't aligning perfectly with the key.

Once it has turned to pos. 1, don't do anything else until you've got the barrel out!
