Title: lpg question
Post by: mathewst on 24 January 2011, 12:46:43
I am loking at putting lpg in the mig.
System is BRC with direct injection.
How much more lpg will the car consume?
Are there any recomendations on driving (two tanks lpg one petrol tank) or something similar?
Any advice is welcome

Mine uses around 10% more LPG than petrol, go for the biggest tank you can accomodate, mine is 80 litres but still leaves plenty of room.

Same here, about 10% down on petrol, ie 30mpg on petrol, 27 mpg on gas.

Your looking at 10-20% drop in mpg, on petrol i could easily hit 34mpg average, lpg, lucky to get 27, mostly i got 25.

But with LPG, mpg is not important, its pence per mile!

if you are going to have it installed, never let them drill the manifold in situ.. and ask them to do every step of parameter tuning for sensors as written in the official installation guide ..  and before you go, be definitely sure of your all ignition components so car is trouble free initally..  and check/ or have it checked for error codes before installation starts..

Always a good question to ask the installer, just a few small holes can create a lot of crap for the engine to intake, these were taken when the injectors where drilled and tapped for mine:

As for tank size, the petrol one remains. The best solution is a 80L torpedo tank, but you do loose half the boot and ability to put anything through into the car. You could get a 55L donut tank and replace spare wheel, but range is limiting.

What systems do you have on your cars (the one I bought should be pretty good since it was the most expensive one?
Also Cem good idea about code checking before leaving the car to be lpg-ed
I have no idea about lpg installing.

most of us who have done DIY went with Stag kit, given its been fitted to a number of members cars, between us we must have clocked up a lot of miles. I've done 20k trouble free on it

Thanks Tunnie.
I saw a how to about instaling lpg, but here you cannot install it anywhere than in the authorised dealers cause you cannot have the car motted without lpg certificate  ( for which you have to get the papers from the dealers about kit and installation and then pay the state another 150 pounds  >:( )

same problem,  different pirates  >:(

I must note , here most installers dont bother detailed tuning of parameters and preparing the map.. instead they load a default map/parameters previously installed on another car (same model of course).. which I doubt will give same results on every car.. of course new model lpg ecu's can compansate but not everytime..

I have the BRC Sequent 56 system fitted (professionaly done) and am exceedingly pleased with it.

Fuel costs have dropped from 25p/mile on petrol to 15p/mile on LPG .. a saving of 40% ... and that is over just under 3 years and 30,000 miles .. :)

what sort of prices are we talking about to lpg a v6 ?  ( diy  )
i would need a donut tank as i need all the boot space i can  :y

Tiger not sure donut tank in a V6 is good since it is too small (45 to 50 litres i think). Range of the car would be pretty small.
Plus the position of the spare wheel seems pretty dangerous to me, not protected by virtually anything except a body panel.

from experience , 80 litre tanks are good for people who commute long distances everyday..  and they have the advantage when you travel between cities as lpg stations are not that frequent.. (if you ignore loosing half of the boot)..

I used 45 litre tank on my previous car and was adequate for more than a week.. so imo it depends on your daily mileage..

Mine is a 75 litre tank & still leaves plenty of boot space for my varied needs :y

sadly the boot has either a big dog in there or all my tools and cable  :)

95% of my driving is round town in trafic so poping in for a top up is never going to be a problem  :y

struggling too get 24mpg at the moment  :(

don't want to get rid of the mig, it might be a bit of a shed but it runs like a dream nowdays so something needs to be done.

Can anyone recommend a supplier for an AC STAG 4 ECU with complete front end kit please ? Ideally I'd like a supplier that is able to give some telephione support if required.
Do the kits come with good instructiions or just a wiring diagram ?
Many Thanks in Advance
Steve

You have a PM with the info ;)

They only come with a wiring diagram really but there are many guides in the maintenance section ;)

You'll get better/quicker support through here and between us we can probably solve most problems for you :y
